Well, after trying multiple speed and quality options, I ended up dropping to 16-color, PC Speaker and no extra RAM to get through it. At least it's over...

I did successfully get past that point with lowest quality and 50% speed, and now I'm at the other lockup point I forgot about: as all the friends show up to the party in the Lost City. When Manu starts to climb down the pillar, it locks again. Back to trying things until something works. Man, can't...

I have tried it at a slow speed with lowest detail, and DOSBox cycles around 3000 or so. I'll apply the unofficial patch and see if that helps.
