Re: Question for people who use GOG (Good Old Games)...
Huh. Certain games just aren't sold in certain countries. Living in Germany, I see a lot of that. Apparently, CivCity: Rome is only sold in certain countries on Steam, and I have no idea why Australia is excluded. Maybe some sort of licensing issue. While the GOG Galaxy client does need an Internet ...

Re: Question for people who use GOG (Good Old Games)...
GOG Galaxy is basically like the Steam client. It's an all-in-one thing, where you can browse the store for games to buy, browse your library for games to install, or browse your list of installed games for games to play. If you're used to how things work on Steam, GOG Galaxy is pretty much the same...

Re: King's Quest VII - Chapter 5 - The Dog.
I think that's a good solution for games that rely on randomness (e.g. roguelikes) that still want to avoid the long tails in the probability distributions. However, I don't think addresses the underlying issue with this situation in KQ7. I see three main issues with it: Communication and player exp...

Re: King's Quest VII - Chapter 5 - The Dog.
Lord, that's some bad design. It ended up eventually working when I walked into the werewolf screen area and then back ... I agree completely. Even if a player gets the "bark = deadly" connection, that doesn't tell them under what conditions it changes to be safe (i.e. for all they know, ...

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
I agree that bmmpxf is a strange choice of word. On the other hand, I can't think of any potential word that wouldn't seem strange, unless it's instead one of the standard magic words (e.g. abracadabra, alakazam, open sesame, hocus pocus), which would instead seem out of place in a fictional world t...

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
I don't think it's useful to think of Orddu, Orwen, and Orgoch as people with comprehensible goals and motivations. They're more along the lines of goddesses, with no personal stakes in the world of mortals but a willingness to make deals with those who seek them out. I do agree that the multiple pa...

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
Thanks for that info. I knew it had to be something to do with Hen Wen entering first, but I wasn't sure how to get that, since I never played through the part of rescuing her.

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
If you lose your water flask to the current, it'll just be swept away to the screen south of starting screen, where you can pick it up. So that's not a dead end. I think the lake can serve as an alternative entrance to the cave, but I'm not quite sure how. Opening the game in AGI Studio, I can see s...

Re: Request for Screenshot(s) - Diskette Install message(s)
Speech, even compressed to a low quality, takes up a lot of space. It would take dozens to hundreds of floppies, which would be completely unreasonable. So yes, they only started with voice acting once CD-ROMs made it feasible. King's Quest 5 was their first CD-ROM game and their first game with ful...

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
Here's the mapping I came up with:
A: interact/confirm
B: menu/cancel
X: use item
Y: look
LB or RB: select item
LT: save
RT: restore
back: quit
start: change game speed

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
Quick update regarding gamepad: I'd been thinking about it wrong. I was thinking in terms of JoyToKey, which wouldn't work, since the mapping are additive (i.e. if you map button 1 to F6, it'll send both F6 and button 1 to the game). However, DOSBox has its own key mapper which works perfectly. You ...

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
Yes. As I understand it, the intent is that it's still just the exact same game, only with a mouse control. BC seems perfect for such a remake, since it already frames all its interactions in terms of just "look", "do", and "use item". I can't vouch for how well the rem...

Re: My Black Cauldron playthrough
The AGI interpreter has native joystick support. When I use my Xbox controller through DOSBox, the left stick is for movement, and it works normally: hold it to move (in one of the eight directions), recenter to stop. The native button support isn't great though: Button 1: open menu Double-press but...

Re: Steam and GOG sales
I'm really hesitant to recommend anything, since tastes can differ and I don't want to be responsible for someone trying something end up disliking or for seeming to endorse every individual aspect of something that I merely liked overall. It's also now also been over a year since I played it, and i...
