Hmm -- so, since a Sierra remake takes an EGA game and remakes it in VGA, a "demake" is the reverse. Clever idea.
Am I wrong, or is the precise term for this "remake for legacy hardware"? Just wondering, not criticising. "Demake" is snappier, even if it's not a word. (Yet).

Though you may not have heard of it before today, "demake" has been around for quite some time in the retro/classic gaming circles and is the common term.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 6:54 am Hmm -- so, since a Sierra remake takes an EGA game and remakes it in VGA, a "demake" is the reverse. For instance, people have been moaning and complaining about wanting a "QFG5 'demake'" for years on QFG boards, to move it away from the 3D engine and match the QFG4 design...

That's fair enough. As I said, I'm not criticising. I'm just wondering if there's a precise definition for what "demake" actually means. Let's google it:goatmeal wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 8:18 amThough you may not have heard of it before today, "demake" has been around for quite some time in the retro/classic gaming circles and is the common term.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 6:54 am Hmm -- so, since a Sierra remake takes an EGA game and remakes it in VGA, a "demake" is the reverse. - Wikipedia says that it's "a video game remake on an older or less capable platform, or one which converts the game to an older graphical or gameplay style."
- wikitionary says it means "To remake (a modern game) for an older platform."
- TV Tropes says it involves "simpler graphics and sound, and simplified gameplay although the basics are mostly kept, often translated from 3D to 2D."
- And Catness Game Studios says "...It is usually not a commercial release but rather a project carried out by fans to imagen how any current-gen title would look on another system."
OK. Now I wonder, how old (or new?) is this word, roughly? I'm just thinking etymologically (i.e. about the origin and development of the word). Who knows, we might even get it into the OED.
And I agree, remaking QfG5 into earlier styles (QfG4 or even QfG3) would be awesome. One thought on this: in QfG3 and QfG4, there's a collection of tools at the top of the screen (I'm not sure what's called, exactly? I know that when Microsoft developed their current Office and moved away from the menu system, they called it a "ribbon", but I'm sure that's not what Sierra called it. Sorry, I can't find a screenshot of it. Anyway).
So since Silmaria, the setting of QfG5, is based on ancient Greece, it may be interesting to st- to adapt (;)) the QfG3 "ribbon" (i.e. tools like "Walk", "Look", "Talk", "Magic" etc.) to Greek colours and symbols. Also, in QfG3, the symbols are flanked by simple columns that might be found in north African ruins; so in QfG5, they might be flanked by a style of columns more associated with Greece (Ionic, Doric or even Corinthian, etc.)

I took a quick look at the Urban Dictionary this morning, and there was a submitted definition from April 2019, so if the date is to be believed, it's at least 5 years old...Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 5:47 pm OK. More than likely much, MUCH older.
Update: I just found a Reddit thread from 2011 about video game demakes.
Know your Memes claims it was August 2007:

Yeah, OK. I'm just thinking the term is so concise and clear, it should be in the OED. Or maybe Merriam-Webster. Point is, it should enter the mainstream.
Anyway, I'm sidetracking this thread. Sorry!
