I still don't understand the clue about them not being great, or about time being my enemy. But oh well.

For I am not a vegetable, animal, or mineral - Botanically, a pumpkin is a fruit.
Around this time, my presence is generally traditional - It's Halloween right now, and Jack o' Lanterns are traditional
In fact I think you'll find my countenance to be typical - "Countenance" is a clue to having a face. And these are typical Jack o' Lanterns

I am found closer to home - Found near the town
I don't see the light of day - Found only at night
'Tis the season -- wrong season - The season/holiday of Halloween

"Great", like Tawmis said, is a reference to "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown". And the time references are a clue that they are found only at night.
