I appreciate the Kings Quest series

Post by DonaldDuckCo »

I have beaten King's Quest 5, 6 and 7.

I have yet to beat King's Quest 1-4. I just wanna express my gratitude towards the imagination and wonders of these old games here.
I think 1-4 KQ games are probably the best, they are hard but very imaginative games. Where you can type out your thoughts you wanna express to the character.

King's Quest IV was my favorite of the series.

Yes, King's Quest 1 to 4 are great. :) King's Quest 5 and 6 are also good and very imaginative, especially when it comes to your character dying in strange ways.

I have yet to play King's Quest 7. The graphics are simply not my cup of tea. (Of course not, they're graphics). ;)

I also haven't played King's Quest 5 in a good long while. I would like to, but I would like to listen to the voices and also read the subtitles at the same time. Is that possible? Obviously, I understand if it's not.

Are you not a fan of Disney animation style?

I assume ye have not played Torin's Passage either?

Ack!!! :shock: Did I say I don't like the graphics because they're graphics?? Oops. :oops: *beats head against the wall* ;)

And yes, I'm not really a fan of the Disney animation style. Maybe it's because of, when I watched Disney as a kid, the graphics were blurry and indistinct. Later, as an adult, they always struck as overly cutesy (except when Donald lost his temper - I liked that). :lol: On the other hand, Donald is hard to understand at the best of times.

No, I never played Torin's Passage ... or the Black Cauldron (which is also a Disney movie, I think?) ... or either of the Manhunter games (which have nothing to do with it, except they came out about the same time as Black Cauldron). ;)

Blurry?

Disney movies were often very dark. Watch Bambi, for example. Oh, it's cute. But it has a very, very, very dark start.
Many of the older Disney movies were dark like this.

.... Black Cauldron is a Disney movie....

....

But it's based off the book that predates the movie.

By 20 years.

(I've had been re-reading that whole series recently, until I began re-reading Hobbit and LotR)

I can't remember. All Disney films become a single blur to me. Maybe because there were so many. Or maybe because of the late-70s/early-80s TV I watched them on, with a not-very-good reception. ;)

(Heck, I can still remember black-and-white TV, and how excited I was when colour television came in ... with, sometimes, not-very-good reception ... 'cos it was an early model). :P

The only Disney film I can recollect from being a kid, with any clarity, is this one:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... racter.png

... which is funny, 'cos the film came out before I was even born. :lol: But it was still played when I was big enough of a kid to sort-of understand it, about 10 years later ... oh, and it had subtitles, 'cos it was in English ... and reading subtitles is boring to a kid. ;)

There's that, of course. But the only Disney films and scenes I can remember are:

- Snow White ("Hi-ho" scene, and "Snow Cleans the House" scene ... with birds)
- Mickey as Sorcerer's Apprentice (brooms creating havoc scene ... can't remember much before the sorcerer leaves or after he returns, except Mickey being scolded)
- And -- oh my! -- a film that I can't even remember the title of, but it had a song that went, "Zippedi-doodah! Zeippedi-hey! My oh my, it's such a wonderful day!" :lol: I can't remember the rest of the film, but I remember that one. I haven't seen it for ages, though.

I watched other (non-Disney) cartoons as a kid, of course -- but seeing as the choice was limited to either Smurfs, Care Bears or Transformers, is it any wonder that as a kid, I thought Transformers was the most fun? :lol:

Hmm. *shrug* Sorry, never got to read it, neither as a kid nor as an adult.

The English books that I did get to read (in translation to Hebrew, of course) "The Hobbit", some "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", and Edith Hamilton's classic "Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes" (1942). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythology_(book)

I guess even then, I was drawn to fantasy and mythology. ;) So what about you?

Most people haven't seen "Song of the South" for ages, either... :?

That one is not only locked up in the famed Disney vault until the end of time (i.e., forever), but that vault has been encased in 10 feet of radioactive concrete and subsequently dumped into the Mariana Trench.

If they could shoot every existing copy of that movie into the Sun, they would.

Yikes. :shock: What is so bad about that film? Sorry, I'm confused. :?

I can't recall anything about it, except that song. (I only saw it once, when I was a kid, and that was many years ago).

It's considered super racist because of the stereotypes portrayed from what I remember.

There's a few of these, including animated ones, that Disney has locked away.

Re: I appreciate the Kings Quest series

I'm sorry; I had no idea. :( I googled it and found out why.

So let's get back to KQ. :) I'd like to say I appreciate KQ6, for various reasons:

- I thought it was a more complicated (and slightly more "grown-up"?) story - especially more than, say, KQ1 or KQ2;
- It had all the usual fantasy tropes (e.g. fantastical creatures, mazes), and the many usual Sierra "Have A Nice Death";
- But when you first enter the town, you encounter distrust and even hostility (something which, I think, the Coles "borrowed" for Quest for Glory 4 - KQ6 came out in 1992, and QfG4 in 1993 :));
- There is also a general atmosphere of dread, especially in the Maze, and later, when Alexander enters the palace and has to hide from guards etc.

So, all in all, it's a very satisfying adventure to finish. :)

Then again, I also found KQ4 quite challenging, and it also has a female protagonist (which isn't common in Sierra games). KQ7 has two, of course, but other than those? Laura Bow, Grace Nakimura ... Patti (in LSL3 and LSL5) ... ;) Can anyone recall any others?

Sorry for digressing. Thanks! :)

Which do you like more.

Gabriel Knight 2 FMV game, Phantasmagoria 1 game or Phantasmagoria 2 game?
