KQ8 - Soundless cutscene hangs

Paid for the game on GOG years ago. I've had to use multiple patches to even play it at all. I've hit a blocker-- I can't finish the cutscene at the beginning of the Dimension of Death because the audio goes out upon entering the portal and the cutscene is waiting for the voice audio to finish. There's no option to save the game between entering the portal and starting the cutscene. The function for changing worlds, unfortunately, is the same one for loading a saved game, and loading a saved game kills the audio.

Anyone have a fix or workaround? I see there are save files on the Sierra Help Page, but none for this particular part. Disabling cutscenes or audio entirely seems like it would work, but turning the sound down in the options doesn't accomplish this.

I have not encountered this. At first guess I'd say it is probably because the old Indeo codec is not installed. It was depreciated and disabled by Microsoft in later versions of Windows. I don't know if it has been disallowed on newer Windows. You could try downloading and installing the latest version you can find and see if that works.

Yikes, opening that save causes the loading screen to hang at an empty meter for several seconds without any music, then it quietly kills the program.

The save is from an installation from the original CD using my installer. The save works with that installation. Since you bought it from GOG you could try to download it from GOG again and reinstall it.

Success! The issue of loading the save file you provided is resolved. As an added bonus, loading a save after playing no longer mutes the sound!

# Fresh install from GOG.
# Did *not* run the PowerShell commands this time that I did before; instead ran the 64-bit MoE13fg_64 available on your help page.
# Dropped the kq8fix.exe in the new installation's directory.
# Copied my save over to the new installation's directory.

It would seem the PowerShell commands I was using were the culprit, despite them making load times significantly faster by keeping all files local.
