This is one that I haven't solved, yet. You could try a virtual machine.

Not sure which is worse.

The fact you're trying to play Mask of Eternity.

Or that you're using Vista as an OS.

I kid, I kid! :)

Well, my desktop uses XP, but my laptop uses Vista. Also Vista is the future, unfortunately, it seems, and I'd like to be able to play all the games in the future--including Mask.

No. Vista is an astronomical failure. Windows 7 is the future.

There are some GLIDE emulators out there, though. Wrappers only allow a game in 3DFX to be played with OpenGL or Direct3D. With an emulator you'd get the benefits of what GLIDE actually looked like, which, at the time, was far better than OpenGL or Direct3D.

The GLIDE wrappers do no good if you can't get the game to start in the first place.

You will need a copy of Win 98 to install in it, but just go to Microsoft and search the downloads for Virtual PC, a free download. Install it and install Win 98 in it.

You will need an install disk of Windows 98. VPC97 no longer supports Win95. You also need a disk image of a Win98 startup floppy.
  1. Launch VPC and click "New"
  2. Choose "Windows 98"
  3. Select Using 128 MB RAM
  4. Select "New virtual hard disk"
You now have a new, but empty virtual machine. Follow the steps below to install Win98.
  • Start the new VPC machine
  • Go to "Floppy" -> "Capture Floppy Disk Image" and browse to your image of the Win98 Startup Disk.
  • Go to "File" -> "Reset"
  • Select "Start computer with CD-ROM support"
  • Insert your Windows 98 disc in your CD drive and go to "CD" -> "Use Physical Drive D:" (or whatever is your CD drive letter)
  • Change to the CD drive by typing "D:" then type "SETUP" and follow the prompts to install windows 98.

DOSBox is no problem on Windows 7. I have not tried MoE on 7, but I would not expect much improvement there. The best hope may be to wait for better DirectX support in one of the virtualizers.

Yeap, just as Collector said, DOSBox games run just fine in Win7. MoE still doesn't work. There is a new XP Mode you can download for Win7 that's supposed to give full XP support via an updated virtualization. But you must make sure your CPU supports chip-level virtualization or you can't run it.

It's not supposed to work for DirectX graphics, though.

Wow. How retro. I can't believe I just installed a virtual Windows 98 computer on my system. And I did it just to play a game that most people have said is the worst King's Quest game in the series. I really am that big of a nerd.

After many failed attempts at "compatibility mode" in Vista, I went for it and installed the virtual 98 machine. I hardly believe it, but KQ8 works flawlessly now. Looks great. Sounds great. No problems.

So far the game is pretty interesting with a cool UI that is a bit different than the traditional point-and-click. If anyone is willing to give up half an hour to an hour doing this, let me know and I can post the steps I went through to get it working. Happy adventuring!

A virtual machine was the only way that I found to get MoE running on Vista or Win7. Feel free to contribute.

Does either 3D accelerated mode work in VM?
