Help with getting KQ7 to run with DOSBox

Post by SerenaWSU »

I've spent the last two days looking through these forums trying to see if there is anything to help me with my problem, so I'm giving in and posting my question.

I have a newer computer (bought in July 2009) and it runs Vista. I have the 2006 Kings Quest Collection and installed it and the update in C://Sierra instead of Program Files. I also made sure the Dos Box was installed in program files. When I originally installed this, the game was installed in program files and when I downloaded the patch with Dos Box I couldn't get any of the games to run in Dos Box. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled it according to the advice I found on these forums. KQ1-6 now run perfectly on Dos Box but KQ7 opens the DOSBox for a couple seconds then close it down. Is it because they haven't gotten the lastest updates made from DOSBox to be compatible with Vista or am I doing something wrong. When the update was downloading, I noticed a message in dos where they were trying to delete something from KQ7 and after twenty some attempts it gave up. Maybe that is the issue.

Thank you for any help. I'm sorry, but as simple directions and step by step directions if possible.

Do you see a SIERRA.EXE file in the KQ7 folder?

The KQ7 updater did not complete, then. Reinstall the games and reapply the patch. Be sure to allow the updater to complete before you do anything else. It may take some time to complete. When it is finished you should have a SIERRA.EXE, RESOURCE.CFG and KQ7HR.ICO in the KQ7 folder.

If you can't see the .EXE extension you have Windows set to "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options. Unchecking this option is good practice anyway as malware authors sometimes try to hide their nasties by giving it a double extension, i.e. "name.jpg.exe" makes it look like the file is just "name.jpg" when the Folder Options are set to hide the extensions.

THANK YOU!!!! It worked. Last time I waited for DOS to install everything but it kept coming up with a message saying it was trying to delete some file but was failing. The system gave up after a bit and I think that it didn't download it all the way. Thanks for all your help, I would have just given up otherwise :)
