Has anyone developed a patch that allows GK1CD to be played completely off the hard drive - or found a way so that you can use a COPY of the CD (I'd rather not use the original). :)

err.. DOSBox Installer for Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, posted a week ago or so. If you scroll down a bit you will find a link to one that you only need to insert the CD and run the installer.

BTW, Hendroz's installer only the Windows version. Some will have issues on Vista and on 64 bit Windows. You will also not be shielded from any remaining speed issues or incompatibilities.

Oh! I misunderstood. Thought it needed the CD to run and would need the CD there after, as well.

Sonofa. Well I will go that route then. :D

The first link is to replace the installer, if you wish to burn a copy and the 2nd is to install from the original CD. Both only need the CDs for the game files, not for running the game.

The first was an experiment to see if I could design a better package for an old sierra game than what the Russian company did with the new Sierra collections. I think that I was able to deliver all that the original game had, including extras, but at the same time, setup the game to run in DOSBox automatically like a native Windows game. I think that my PQ 4 Most Wanted installer shows that I could have done a new collection package in days, not months, with all the extras. Just by using one of the old collections (as long as it was the best collection for the purpose,) NSIS, Sierra's FTP and the NRS patches. New Larry or QfG collections anyone?

I am becoming more familiar with the NSIS installer scripting and I am finding just how flexible and powerful it is. It is also much less clunky than InstallShield. When I get a chance, I am going to completely redo the collection patches to be more accommodating to users that have the collections installed where ever they want.
