And sometimes you can find never seen before backgrounds that were not used in the game.

Very true, especially in the case of KQ7. There are several backgrounds in the files that exist only as black and white sketches (a bridge over a river of lava in Vulcanix is one of my favorites), as well as alternate versions of existing backgrounds. And as I've mentioned before, there are oodles of unused animations in that game as well.

If anyone should happen to find anything interesting hidden in a game's resource files, if you email it to me, I'll be sure to add it to Sierra's Resource Files.

Try it now. I forgot to copy over the files folder from the old forums.

greetings everybody. i'm new here ... been a long time fan of these games and am just now getting into attempts at modding an old sierra title.

i stumbled across this thread and wanted to know if anyone knew of any programs out there that could extract the images and sound files from resource files in-bulk?

SCI Viewer only seems to *show* the images ... which then require manual screen-grabbing to save. ...Unless I'm using it incorrectly?

Thanks
Ian

Welcome to the forum. The SCI Resource Viewer is about the best tool for extracting the resources from these games. I am not sure of anything that can do do it en masse. You could take a look at SCI Studio an SCI Companion, but I don't think they will do what you want. For the digital audio resources try the Game Audio Player. For MIDI go to Quest Studios. One thing you could try is to use the command line version of SCI Resource Viewer and write a batch file for it.

You can use the old DOS-based SCI Decoder programs. This will bring up a menu showing a list of each resource and its preview on the right. Just press the letter "D" on each entry and it'll dump the resource to disk. It's not perfect but it's a lot easier to press "D" and "Down" continually than it is to go the Extract route with SCI Resource Viewer. Though SCI Decoder will only work with with SCI0, SCI01, and SCI10 games. There is also a dumper program somewhere that will dump SCI1.1 resources and another that will dump SCI32 resources I believe.

It would be nice to get a hold of the tools that NRS and Endroz developed for their work.

There is a newer version of the program that lets you view resources from AGI games (King's Quest II, Police Quest, etc) as well.

I use to have it, but lost it while moving around files on my hard drive.

Does anybody have it?

Yes, I have it. But it's actually an older version, I believe. Many features were removed before Version 1. Like exporting resources (sound resources to MIDIs, etc).

[/b]EDIT:[/b] Scratch that. It appears that this so called "Version 1" version cannot view EGA SCI10 game resources properly. The colouring is all wrong on the backgrounds. But the version I have (which comes with a GUI and command line binaries) can view them just fine. But there's no version number in it. Collector, perhaps you should replace "Version 1" with my version instead.
