help needed to run KQ1 under DOSBox
help needed to run KQ1 under DOSBox
I'm trying to get my original DOS/AGI King's Quest games to play on my XP computer. I copied the 3.5" disks to my harddrive (C:\oldgames\sierra\kq1, etc), then downloaded DOSBox (version 0.72) and followed the directions in its readme file to mount the old games folder. I think I did it right that far, but I get a screen that asks me what drive my original disk is in. No matter what I type, nothing happens. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Tx

Re: help needed to run KQ1 under DOSBox
The issue comes from - someone can correct me - that the original 3.5" disks (and 5.25" disks) had that copy protection where they required the original disk to be inserted for verification/copy protection.
There'd be no way around this - unless you actually have an actual 3.5" floppy drive in your computer that works.
Your best bet would be purchasing one of the numerous "King's Quest Collections" that have come out and are reasonably priced.

PQ - http://www.amazon.com/Police-Quest-Coll ... 480&sr=8-6
SQ - http://www.amazon.com/SPACE-QUEST-COLLE ... 480&sr=8-6
None of these have the "Insert Disk" copy protection that you're currently running into. Someone on here may know a way around that "Insert Disk" copy protection...

Try installing the game with this
http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updat ... tml#KQ1AGI
If that doesn't work, then the advice that Tawm gave is probably your best hope.

YES! The patch did it. Thanks much.

I've had a lot of fun playing KQ1, thanks to your patch. Now I'd like to play KQ2 - KQ6, but at least on 2 I'm running into the same problem of needing the original disk. Do you have patches for the later games, too, that you would share? I've got all the original '80s and '90s games and disks and am in a nostalgia mood. Thanks.

Re: help needed to run KQ1 under DOSBox
The installer page, right? Tried that already, and got that darn message about putting in the original disk. Your first reply had a link within it - something about a patch for kq1. When I clicked that, kq1 started - no disk request. So I was hoping there might be a patch like that for kq2 and others.
Re: help needed to run KQ1 under DOSBox
If you have the files copied from the original floppies, just use the stand alone installers for each game. The installers for the collections will look for the CDs. The installers for the floppy games only need to have the files from the floppy disks copied to the same folder as the installer. For KQ2, download the King's Quest II for DOSBox installer, the next one for 3 and so on.

KQ2 just won't work for me, I guess, but on the up side, KQ3 is running just fine. Thanks for the help.
Re: help needed to run KQ1 under DOSBox
You may want to consider getting the 2006 collection. You can easily find it for around $10US or less. My updater for it can also add your KQ1AGI (which is missing from the collection) to it.
