PQ2 copy protection

Post by the_doctor »

I'm not asking for it (i have it), I'm having a problem with the game accepting my answers. I've played PQ2 more times than I can count. Just finished 1 and starting 2. But after the first time, everytime i put the name (and I know its right) it says I'm wrong and kicks me out.

Ideas?

Is it a legal copy is the first question? :P

(I kid, but I remember that in Laura Bow there was a "fix" that always had it be one finger print)! Made life so much easier even if you owned the legal copy!

But honestly I don't know what that could be - especially since it's just matching a text variable. I recall some of them looking somewhat the same... like a mustache being the one real noticable difference (not as bad as the LSL2 protection with the women, mind you).

I am not too proud to admit that I have "cracked" versions of games that I also legally own. Some of the copy protection schemes were a real annoyance at best and endangers valuable collectibles, such as original manuals through over use at worst.

On a side note, if there was a official de-protected version of any of the games supported by ScummVM, it will bypass the protection on all versions of the game played with ScummVM. Conversely, any cracked games that did not have a legitimate official de-protected version you will find the protection back played through ScummVM.

BTW, while I will not allow direct linking to abandonware sites here, I am not going to come down on anyone for admitting that their copy of a classic game comes from such sources. However, anyone that has a technical issue with an abandonware game might be a little disappointed in the help they get here, though. Repeatedly people have gone to VOGONS for help with a game that most had no issue with, only to have it revealed later on that the problem was solely from bad packaging/ripping/cracking that abandonware copies often suffer from. Problems that never occur in legitimate versions. If a problem cannot be replicated, it is nearly impossible to solve.

I agree completely. As you saw from my collection photos - I have Laura Bow (CB) - but when I found the tweak for the fingerprint I got it. Just so I wouldn't have to keep digging out my box or manual. All of my Sierra games are in boxes, in my closet. Getting to them is less then fun. Unpacking them looking for the specific game, even less fun. :)

But yes. Supporting abanonware/cracked versions is something we should never do because who knows what tweaks were done to config files, exe files, etc.

Also if your not careful where you download your old abadonware/modified version of old games they could contain a virus. Where I get my games is a site that I can trust. Dont feel bad about owning either modified version of games or games that you cant buy anymore. I have games that you cant buy anymore that I got somewhere that Im not going to say. But modified versions I dont trust because they could contain a virus.
