I have a problem with the first GK game crashing randomly when people are talking (usually anyone but Gabriel).
What happens is I will be playing and then I will get the following error messages all in a row.
Wave out open - the specified device is already in use. Wait until it is free, and then try again
Wave out prepare header 1 - specified device header invalid
Wave out prepare header 2 - specified device header invalid
Wave out write - specified device header invalid (this error pops up twice)
SIERRAW caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>040F:9A15 3/4 LL SIERRAW will close. (The 3/4 is written like a fraction and the LL are superscript with some space in between the two, also the numbers change).
I installed the game using the XP installer (I'm using Vista 32-bit). I tried using DOS-Box but I couldn't get the voices to work and the game alternated between running too fast and too slow. When the game crashes the voice stops and the game hangs while the music continues to play until I get to the closing message, which is when the game is forced to close.
It seems that I can make this problem not happen as often if I set the priority of Command Prompt to real time (I tried this because the first error said something was already using wave). This is not full proof, though, as crashes still occur.
GK 1 crashing because of sound?
Re: GK 1 crashing because of sound?
The Endroz installer is no longer maintained. The Sierra SCI Windows games were far buggier than the DOS versions. This is only going to get worse with each new version of Windows. DOSBox is the way to go. Try the SHP installer:

Thanks, I didn't realize the installer was out of date, and trying to install it on my own was proving difficult.
I will try this one out and see if it solves my problem.
Thanks a lot!
