GK3 - E-mail Issues

Post by Doppelgamer »

I am currently experiencing issues when using "Sidney" in Gabriel Knight 3. First off, the bits and pieces of the laptop casing are not aligned with the screen of said laptop. The laptop screen is in one piece. All menus other than "E-mail" seem to work fine, but when I choose e-mail, the window containing the e-mail itself is displayed below the screen.

Typically the game is at 1920x1080 resolution with all graphics options set to maximum. I understand that there are some 2D issues when running high resolutions. The in-game laptop displays properly on my screen when using 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 in both software and hardware accelerated modes. However, the e-mail window never displays on-screen, unless I am in 1920x1080 and then, it's not possible to click on it, or see the entire thing. Occasionally, the e-mail window will display below the in-game laptop screen at 1024x768 (similar to 1920x1080), when switching between resolutions, but the result is the same. To summarize, 1920x1080 and sometimes 1024x768 are partially displaying the e-mail window in the in-game laptop, but it is not entirely visible and cannot be manipulated. 640x480 and 800x600 do not display the e-mail window at all, yet the laptop screen looks fine otherwise.

I have tried adjusting the Windows compatibility options for the game's shortcut. (Admin, various Windows compatibility modes, "Disabled visual themes, etc...) In addition, I have attempted various in-game detail levels/settings. "Disable Catalyst AI" has been tried in the ATI Catalyst Control Center. I have also tried ending the ATI "CCC.exe" and "MOM.exe" processes that belong to ATI, but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System: Windows 7 64-bit with an ATI Radeon 4890 card. Windows is fully up to date, DirectX 9.0b has been installed and the graphics card is using the 10.3 catalyst driver package.

I've seen you post as "Collector" on the GoG.com forums. I am known there as "EndlessKnight". Another user, running an nVIDIA card is having the same issue, and you can see our comments there.

Wow that's really jacked up!

Is that the only time it happens? If you need a saved game, I could probably help you out.

Not knowing what happens, I didn't want to miss out on something by not checking my e-mail. That being the case, I haven't gone past it and received other e-mails. Do you get another shortly after the initial e-mail message?

Thanks for the offer of the saved game, but I'll hold out for a solution first. I'd like to experience all that the game has to offer. In the meantime, I'm hoping to try the game on some other computers in the house.

Jules is our resident LB expert.

I'll try to get around to taking a look at your save games when I get a chance, but it may be a couple of days.

I'm sorry, I've been incredibly busy. I'll see if I can get to it yet this week.

I'm still getting this as well. Now using the Catalyst 10.7 (Win 7 64-bit) drivers. A user on the forum I originally linked is using nVIDIA and is getting the same results. I have confirmed that this also occurs on the Windows XP system downstairs, which uses nVIDIA.

Sorry that it took so long for me to take a look at this. It is a problem of the resolution the game is set at. Even though you can run the game at higher resolutions, it has graphical problems of it not scaling properly when you do, such as the movies remaining at 640x480. Turn down the resolution to at lease 800x600 for this scene.

As described in the original post, while the laptop will display fine at lower resolutions such as 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768, the e-mail window is still not visible. So that is not a solution. (On both Win 7 & Win XP, ATI & nVIDIA.)

Simply setting the resolution to 800x600 works on my machine. Does running it in a Window help?

I tried setting it to all resolutions. nothing works.. the email is the only thing I cant access. I'm wondering if its a driver issue with ATI and Nvidia. What video card are you using collector?
