QFG3 Paladin -- stuck

Post by Tinuviel »

OK, I need some help.

I'm working on a paladin, and I cannot get the game to advance. I've completed everything; I've become a warrior in the Simbani village and obtained the drum, but I cannot get back into the Laibon's hut. I've bought everything I need for it, but I am not allowed back in his hut.

How do I get past this?

I'm not sure what may be going on. The timer bug is with the conversation with the Laibon, not getting in the hut. Besides, that bug is fixed by the NRS patch, which is included with the installer. Perhaps something you missed?

So I assume you have dreamed a little dream already?

Have you checked with the pill maker - perhaps they could dispel some of your problems?

But he might need something, a drink and a little fruit...

You might have to wait a day for best results!

When you come back - remember, two heads are better than one.

Tickle his fancy and you will get something from him.

Back at the village, they should be able to prove a leopard never changes his spots or something...

Maybe you can dispel that myth?

Then maybe you can go back and tell him about the Dinosaur?

I've used the dispel potion.

I've done the initiation.

I've done the dream sequence.

I've obtained everything the apothecary needs.

I'm just unable to get back in the hut to give him the bride price for the leopard woman.

I made a post here almost a year ago where I was having the EXACT same problem. I was playing as a paladin and could not get into the laibon's hut to give him the bride price at any time of day. I eventually gave up.

Did you install the timer patches before you started playing? The only thing I can think of is that I didn't install the timer patches before I started the game. I thought since I was playing through DOSBox it wouldn't matter. I installed them after I was already having this problem, but it didn't do anything.

Sorry not to be of much help. Good luck and let me know if you find a fix.

I'm using DOSBox, so the timer patches shouldn't even be needed.

NewRisingSun recommends using DOSBox along with the patches. You can still get timer error within DOSBox in some cases if the cycles are set to over 7000. If you have installed the game with the installer from here, your game is already patched.

I think I was running with cycles=10000. Applying the patches post-bug did not seem to do anything. One day I'll start fresh using the installer.

Collector, what's the recommended cycles for the QFGs? Around 5000, or does it vary per game? Obviously patching first is recommended regardless.

I usually start at 10000 cycles for SCI games. Some may need as low as 7000 or so. I'll lower it if a particular game needs it. You should not save games from an unpatched game after the game is patched or it can carry over the bugs from the unpatched game.

I used the installer. So I'm still at a loss.

If you are sure that you haven't missed anything you could try going back to an earlier save and try doing things in a different order.

When I played through, I bought all the needed items at the beginning of the game, before leaving Tarna. I was suspicious that this may have caused the problem, as in there may be some trigger in the game that allows you to see the laibon again when you acquire the needed items, but if you already have them, the trigger is never activated.

I still harbor that suspicion, even though I've been told by people that they successfully played through the game after buying all the needed items at the beginning like I did. When I try playing through again, I will only buy items as needed, just in case.

Tinuviel, another question for you:

Did you import your character from QFG2? I imported mine from QFG2VGA, and during the opening sequence where it replays the events from the end of QFG2, it seemed to use the magic user animations even though I imported a paladin. I thought that was kind of strange even though it didn't seem to affect the rest of the game.

So were you able to get past this?

I was thinking of starting fresh tonight with all the patches pre-installed. I had assumed that this would fix the problem, but now that you say you used Collector's installer, I'm somewhat concerned that I'll run into the same problem again.

I'm curious to hear if you imported a character from QFG2VGA like I did.

I was not able to get past this.

And yes, I did import from QFG2, but I did not have the issue that you described.
