Having trouble with RWANTH version and DOSBox installer...

Feeling like this game could be murder... literally? Well, come on in here for some extra detective work (and clues/hints/etc!) for the Laura Bow games (The Colonel's Bequest and The Dagger of Amon Ra).

Having trouble with RWANTH version and DOSBox installer...

Post by Dhai »

I hope this is the right place to post this - I looked around and it seemed to be!

I've had the Roberta Williams Anthology version of this game working just fine and dandy in DOSBox for a long time, until I got me a shiny new laptop with Windows 7, and all of a sudden this game, and ONLY this game, will not work using the same configuration I've always used (all the others work fine, along with the QFG series, The 7th Guest, Martian Memorandum, etc etc etc). The black screen pops up for a second then instantly disappears with no explanation.

So, I figured I'd give this installer a try and see if it solves my problem, but it doesn't seem to be able to recognise the game on the RWANTH discs. I tried with disc 4 (the disc the game is actually on), and even with disc one just in case, but it just kept telling me to insert the disc and try again. Is there some extra step that needs to be taken to get the RWANTH version of the game to install with the DOSBox installer? It said it worked with this version, soooo I'm confused and sad. SAD, I TELL YOU!

Also, hello... first post. I've been trying to introduce my man to all the old games I love and it's proving tough with this fancy new machine. Kinda makes me miss my old crappy desktop. ;)

Welcome to the forum. Are you using the RWA installer or the LB2 installer?

The LB2 installer... I was going to use the RWA one but the LB2 installer said it worked with this version of the game so I figured I'd just use that, since I already have all the other RWA games working just fine.

Also, I am ashamed of my thread title typo. Totally didn't see that in my frantic state.

Update: cannot run the RWA installer anyway. Perhaps it's not made to work with Windows 7? No matter how I configure the compatibility settings it just gives me an error message saying that it's "not a valid win32 application". In fact, the windows 7 compatibility feature has NEVER done anything useful for me so far. That's why I wanted to try and get this game working in DOSBox, but for some reason unknown to me it just won't. Worked just fine in WinXP exactly as I have it all set up now, but no dice in Win7. Oh sadness.

Compatibility settings should not be used with the installers. It sounds like it got corrupted in the download. Redownload the RWA installer.

Going to let Collector step up and give the right answer... but if I am not mistaken - don't mess with the installer with compatibility mode or anything... and don't mess with the executable after it's been installed using the installer (by trying to switch it to compatibility mode)... the installer should, I believe, take care of all the configuration you need to do. So launch the installer and run as is.

EDIT: And he beat me to the punch by like a millisecond.

Hmmm, well I've tried re-downloading it multiple times but I still get that same error message. It could very well be something else going on with my computer, I'll have to look into that. But thanks for the help, guys!

Also, just FYI, the KQ7 DOSBox installer worked marvelously... Dagger of Amon RA seems to be the only one still giving me a ton of headache to get up and running! I still can't figure out why everything else works fine the way I've always set it up previously, including other cd-rom voice games, but this one won't. Good thing I've already completed it multiple times anyway, eh?

I don't know if the Dagger of Amon Ra has the Diagnostics Tool with the installer... if it does - run it and copy and paste it here. :) If it doesn't, Collector will tell me to shut up and kick me back into the corner!

The file was corrupt on the server. I have re-uploaded it. Empty your browser cache to download it if you still have trouble with it.

That did the trick! Thanks so much! Now let's see how long it takes for the phrase "you pick it up and place it in your purse" to drive me insane... it's almost as bad as "Alexander pulls out his magic map... Alexander feels a strange pulling sensation".
