Broken PQ2 Demo

Post by clone2727 »

Hi,

The Police Quest 2 demo on your downloads page is broken. Inside the police station in DOSBox, the game will just freeze. Does anyone have the original source of that demo or know where to find it?

Thanks

I have managed to reconstruct the broken demo using resources from the full game.
However, there is one view that can't be found in the game. It is a view of Bonds walking and holding his pistol by his side. I replaced this view with a regular view of Bonds walking. The view is used in the last scene of the demo.

You can use this "fixed" version, but I hope the efforts to search the original will continue.

I attached the fixed version to this post, and can be also found here:

Welcome to the forum. Thanks, I was aware of your efforts from the ScummVM forums. I am not sure where I originally got the demo from, probably Brian's old Ultimate AGI/SCI Site, which would make sense as it seems every copy on the net is the same bad copy.

I think the origin of this is here:
http://cd.textfiles.com/sprintos6/GAMEDEMO/LZ/PQ2.ZIP

This site archives free cd collections. The demo is found in a collection called:
Spring Games and Entertainment 6
From Super Oz Software (February 1995)
The zip has no CRC errors so perhaps the bad resource file came straight from Sierra BBS.

If you look at the installer script you will see reference to a couple of additional resource files, but they may have just used a generic script that had support for more than one resource file. The original file from Sierra was probably a self extracting archive, not a ZIP. The ZIP would have come from someone in between.

I am referring to the self-extracting archive. It is an LHA file (and not ZIP as I wrote), and testing it with LHA program for CRC errors shows none. This LHA file has the SIERRA BBS logo shown when extracting.
