Anyone have a SQ (or KQ) "image archive" ?

In Space No One Can Hear You Clean, er, Scream. But if you post in this forum about Space Quest - someone's sure to hear you. I think. Try it, anyway!

Anyone have a SQ (or KQ) "image archive" ?

Post by audiodane »

This may sound silly, but I'm looking to update my set of rotating background images on my PC ... what better way than with SQ/KQ? :)

So you can easily image-google "Space Quest" and get a whole lot of shots... Don't know an easy way however to traverse the results and download the best screenshots.

So I thought I'd ask here.. Does anyone have an archive of various and random Space Quest images? scenes from games are most preferred...

Also looking for KQ images to add to the rotating background mix.. :)

thanks!

You can always try Moby Games. That might help.

You can use the Sierra Resource Viewer to extract images.

Oooo, I like that idea. I have never used it before. I assume (hope) it's easy to use?

Thanks I will have a look!

TOTALLY AWESOME..

thanks!

The GUI version is easy enough to not even need to write a script.. it will be a little time consuming, but I think overall would be quicker than trying to write a script. It looks like from the CLI version that you first have to extract the actual resource files, and then go back and extract pictures from the picture resource files.. unless I'm missing something and there's an easier way?

thanks,

Only problem is going to be the resolution size...

A select few lucky SQ fans around the globe got their hands on the original paintings of certain SQ games. I know Frans (creator of SpaceQuest.Net) had the original painting of the outdoor Magmetheus Canteen background given to him by Scott Murphy himself! Other than that, you can get some bonus wallpapers by buying the games from Good Old Games.

Well I've scaled them 400% using raw pixel doubling. So the images are the same "physical" size on the screen (almost full screen on my laptop), and have the same "net resolution" as the originals. Normal scaling methods introduce tons of artifacts of course since they're meant for jpeg scaling... that's why I picked 4x ... no "algorithm" artifacts.. :)

Only problem is a few of the resource file images aren't "complete." Such as the KQ intro screen with the scrolls but no words on it. And other things like that... It would be nice to actually have characters on the screenshots too though. But that's likely a whole lot more work (unless someone else has already done it).

I looked at MobyGames, and it looks like they did screen grabs from DOSBox or something similar-- that used what looks like scaling with anti-aliasing enabled, so the "fullsize" screen grabs are all fuzzy.. :(

And in lossy JPGs. If you generate them yourself you can use a lossless image format.

In my current sierra games playthrough I grab a screenshot in every single new screen or closeup I see, so yes, I have quite a collection of images :)

Also there is this archive of Lucas and Sierra screenshots of and comparisons between the versions: http://home.comcast.net/~ervind/

PS. I had an old version of SCI Studio but last time I ran it, it crashed 70% of the times when I tried to extract some images.

PS2. Is there such a ripper for linux?

I would imagine that the Sierra Resource Viewer would work under WINE.
