King's Quest VI help :(

Post by totallyice »

Im trying to install KQ6 thrrough DOSBox using the floppy disk version. Everything is great, but when I try to run the game it says "couldnt install video driver! Script #: 0, IP: 0"
When I try to install it using the CD, I see the error message "error creating configuration file" during the installation process. Any suggestions?

The "couldn't install video driver" is because the RESOURCE.CFG is not being written. Run the INSTALL.EXE that's in the installed game's folder to choose your hardware. If you have only mounted your CD in DOSBox and are running the install, it won't be able to write to the RESOURCE.CFG that is on CD. You need to mount both a folder on your hard drive as a C: drive and your CD drive as D:.

I did mount both the C: drive and the CD drive. Still the same message.

Just try running the INSTALL.EXE from the installed folder.

Ok, so I mount the two drives, C: and the CD drive. From the CD drive I type install. Thats when I get the configuration message. It wont allow me to install the files.

Add

Code: Select all

-t cdrom
to the mounting of the CD drive so that the installer knows that you are installing from the CD drive. You can find more information about it in the DOSBox readme.

Also add "-ioctl" as well if you're running Windows XP or higher. And a "-usecd <number of your CD/DVD drive>" wouldn't hurt either (the number being 0 if you only have one drive, higher if you have multiple). All this information is available in DOSBox by typing "intro cdrom" while in drive Z:.

Ok thanks! I followed your directions and it did go through the install procedure (CD version). But when I got back to the prompt and typed in KQ6 it says "Couldn't install video driver! Script #: 0, IP: 0"

Play with the cycles throttler (CTRL+F11 to decrease and CTRL+F12 to increase). Or maybe open up the dosbox.conf file and change the "cycles=" field to either "max" or "auto" or something. Increasing the cycles should help before that, though.

It's working great. Except twice now in the middle of game play it's gone back to the dos prompt saying out of handles. Any idea what this means?

Increase the MINHUNK value in the RESOURCE.CFG file maybe?

Out of curiosity, what did you do wrong in the first place?

He was running the installer without the -t cdrom switch, which made the installer think it was running from the installed folder, not the CD and it couldn't write to the CD.
