Problem with King's Quest: MOE installer

Post by Daventry »

Hi Collector,

I was really excited to see the new installer for KQ: MOE, as I haven't been able to play the game in years (ever since I upgraded from WinXP). I was able to successfully load the entire game with the patches and the glide wrapper, but as soon as I start the program I get a Windows error message reading "Mask of Eternity has stopped working." What's even stranger is that if I take out the disc and then try running the program, I get an error message asking me to insert the disc (even though I seleted the full install option). I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Do you know what I may be doing wrong?

As always, your assistance is greatly appreciated :)

A reboot should take care of it asking for the CD. The crash may be from not all of the files getting unpacked from the cab files. Attach the results from the diagnostic tool.

Thanks for your reply! The CD problem went away after a reboot, just as you predicted. The log file is attached.

Btw, is it normal that my installed directory is only 497 megs (the MOE CD is over 600 I believe)?

It looks like the cab files did not get extracted. Try installing the game in "C:/Sierra/Mask" to see if that works. It may be that the cab wants to extract to Sierra's original default. I don't have much control over the extraction of the Install Shield cab files, so if it works, I'll need to add a routine to the installer to extract it to the default and then move it to the installed directory if different from the default. Not a very elegant way of doing it, but it should work.

Thanks Collector, the reinstall in the Sierra/Mask directory fixed the problem!

The game plays in a really tiny window in the middle of the screen. Is there any way to get it full screen?

It should be playing full screen. Perhaps something with your monitor controls?

Hmm, I'm not sure. It may have something to do with the glidewrapper? The game goes to fullscreen when I move it from 3dfx to direct3d (in the game's settings menu). 3dfx refuses to play in fullscreen though :(

I tried changing the resolution settings in the Glide Configuration Tool, but it didn't seem to do anything.

Yeap, I have the same prob. Using a NVidia 9800 GT on Win7. And the drivers are all up to date.

That might actually be the problem. Some drivers won't display low resolutions at full screen. I had to roll back my drivers at one point so I could have full screen low resolutions.

But isn't it weird that only the 3dfx mode (at either 800x600 or 640x480) runs in small screen? The DirectDraw mode (only available at 640x480) runs in fullscreen. That's what I don't understand :?
