Well, I can't speak for others. But I would have disagreed with them. Yes, DooM was pretty much brainless action. Because it had very little story, really. But there were plenty of FPS games that developed story through the action (most notably several of the Star Wars FPS games come to mind, immediately).DeadPoolX wrote:I suppose I see it somewhat ironic because for MANY years those within the Adventure community acted the same toward other genres, specifically FPS. You'd frequently hear people state their opinions as if they were fact (ex: "Shooters are brainless action! They're all like DOOM!"), yet that was considered valid criticism.
If (and when) I said something to the contrary, my words were either completely ignored or simply shouted down. In a sense, it became gospel within the Adventure community that anything except Adventure games are for morons.
So tell me... how is that any different? If anything, what I experienced was worse, since it wasn't just one article, but people all around me spewing nonsense.
I would think that the "hardcore Adventure folks who hated FPS games" probably base their ideas on the fact that in FPS games (back then, mind you) rarely did you really encounter TOO much interaction with characters. It was usually, "Go here, blow this up", "Go here, turn this on", etc. There was very little NPC interaction, which I feel can really develop any game's story much further.
