Kings Quest 5 Windows Version

Post by KQ Gamer »

I've got a problem with installing the Windows Version of Kings Quest 5 from the King's Quest Collector's Edition. When I open SETUP.EXE it says: "Your current display driver is not supported by this game. You can install a different driver by selecting the appropriate options from the control panel. You may also exit Windows and install and play the game under Dos." In the King's Quest Collector's Edition there are two versions of the game: The Windows and the Dos Version! When I use the KQ 5 installer from sierrahelp.com it only install the Dos version and the Kings quest Collector's Edition installer only install the Dos version too.
I hope somebody can help me!

Out side of some differences in the music, there is not that much difference between the two. The DOS version has fewer problems and the Windows version gains you little. The problem with starting the Windows KQ5 is that it checks the resolution and color depth before compatibility mode can change them. If you are determined to play the Windows version, make a batch file to replace the Windows shortcut and set the compatibility mode for the batch file. This way the resolution and color depth will already be changed before the game starts.

Thanks for helping, but when I start the game with the batch file the game starts but then it says: "Can't find configurations file: win/wrines.cfg"

It needs to include everything in the target of the shortcut.

Code: Select all

C:\Sierra\KQ5\SCIKQ5.EXE -h C:\Sierra\KQ5\win\winres.cfg
or wherever the paths to your SCIKQ5.EXE and winres.cfg are. Keep in mind that the lockups and heap errors at the end of the game are far more likely with the Windows version and that your Windows save games will not work with the DOS version. It is likely that you will play to near the end and not be able to finish the game.

You will need to manually install it or change the resolution before you run the setup. Note that the installer only creates a folder with the config file. It plays the game from the CD.

Thanks very much. I made a file "win" and copied the file "winres.cfg" into the "win" file. Now I can start the game, but I hear only the start and the intro music? What can I do?

When I install the game with the batch file, it only install the win/winres.cfg file! Is that right? And when I play the game I hear not the background music, but all the other sounds!

As I said, the original installer only creates a folder with the config file. It will then play from the CD with save games being written to the installed folder with the config file. The only way around this is to manually install the game.

Install it with the the installer here:

http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updat ... s.html#KQC

It will install the DOS version, but you can see what needs to be in the config file.

Now I opened the file winres.cfg with wordpad. What do I have to change?

The file winres.cfg:

videoDrv = VGA320.DRV
soundDrv = ADL.DRV
audioDrv = AUDBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
kbdDrv = IBMKBD.DRV
mouseDrv = STDMOUSE.DRV
memoryDrv = ARM.DRV
floppy = YES
minHunk = 170K

Just use the installer and use the entries from the config file installed.

You have to set the path to the game's folder with the audio=
