KQ8 and Windows XP

Post by zimme579 »

I bought the KQ7 and 8 package from gog.com, and the KQ7 game works great. However, when I try to open KQ8, I briefly see an image of Connor, and then the game stops and the desktop reappears. I have tried all combinations of compatibility, and the starttxt solution here.

help?

I'm not that familiar with GOG's version. Have you asked their support? You could try the usual things like updating your graphics driver

Graphics driver is updated. I tried the forums at gog.com, and was redirected here by someone else. A few others on the forum seem to have this problem, and gog.com did not respond.

I even reinstalled, and still no luck.

Any suggestions?

As I said, I can't really support GOG's games. I have fixed a couple of their releases and never even received credit for it. MoE is difficult on modern Windows, and as such I consider my MoE installer as experimental. Even so, most of the complaints have been just that the game does not fill the screen when set to 800x600 resolution. GOG's release is more haphazard. About their only fix besides hex editing the main EXE is to delete a couple of files and clumsily editing a couple of config files. I'm not sure if it even includes the official 1.3 patch.

That said, I know that they set the game to run in compatibility mode to over come the missing codec, but causes other problems. Google for and install the Indeo 5 installer, then remove the compatibility settings on the Mask.exe. If you can get into the options menu, try selecting different modes and turning off all of the graphics extras.
