2 problems with King's Quest VI Windows version on ScummVM

Post by pppp »

Hello,i have the original KQ6 CD and i tried installing it in my laptop using the installer that's up for download here.First, when it got to the part where it's supposed to rip the audio track into a flac file it just opened a command line window for a second and then it continued installing. After it was done i checked the game's folder and the flac file was nowhere to be seen. After that i tried to run the game via the shortcut that was created and ScummVM gave me a "Could not change to 640x440 resolution" message and closed. I tried reinstalling the game but it didn't help at all.

If it helps,i'm running Vista 32-bit.

I can get my other Sierra games working fine but this one is what's giving me problems.Anyone can help me figure out what i'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance :D

Do you have more than one CD/DVD drive?

There should be a diagnostic tool in the installed folder. Run that and post the result here. When Collector sees that he should be able to help you.

Ok i'm an idiot and for some reason didn't write the message ScummVM gives me.It's already in the 1st post but here it is just for the heck of it:

"Could not change to 640x440 resolution" then it closes.

As for Collector's question, yes i read the instructions clearly, the cd drive i'm using is my first drive,it is my only physical drive since my other one is a virtual one belonging to Daemon Tools.

I also attached the diagnostic log to this post, hope it helps.

Try unmounting your virtual CD drive and rerun the installer. For the display issue, use the config tool for KQ6 to change the display. Try either a smaller window or full screen.

I had the same problem with ripping audio tracks. I had to temporarily disable my Daemon Tools virtual drives.

It is a limitation of cdda2wav. I might be able to fix it if I can find a way to get the device number of the chosen drive from NSIS, but I have been unable to as of yet. cdda2wav is primarily a Linux tool that has been ported to Windows via cygwin (which increases the size of the installer by over 2MB. I have not been able to find a freeware native Windows command line ripper that works on modern Windows.

I was already trying to use full screen(when the installer asked me if i wanted to change settings i agreed and changed it to full screen.).

Ok i took your advice and it worked.thanks a lot :D So this means i can't just start the game on full screen? Do i always have to start in windowed mode and then press Alt+Enter(That's what i just did)?

Thanks a lot it worked like a charm :D I'll keep a backup of this Conf.exe just in case. BTW Collector there's something i think you should know: Your installers are awesome but there's a problem with some of them specifically the agi games.it's useless trying to use the conf.exe programs to change display to fullscreen because the dosbox.conf files that are installed are missing the "fullscreen=false" line.i had to manually insert "fullscreen=true" on the dosbox.conf files of my kq1,kq2 etc. folders. My brother installed his 2006 KQ Collection on his Windows 7 laptop with your new installer and all the dosbox.conf files of the agi games have the same problem,so i had to manually fix it for him.Since it happened on 2 different computers with 2 different install sources (i use the original floppys and CDs) i'm guessing it's not our problem,is it?

Well, that is why the installers include the config tool. It allows users to choose the settings to suit themselves.
