KQ6 floppy version installation
KQ6 floppy version installation
OK so after finding this site i sent it to all my friends that are also sierra fans so they could easily get their games working. One of them has KQ6 in 9 floppy discs and he couldn't even start the installation.i told him to send me all the files so i could try it myself.i followed the floppy instructions here:
http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updat ... tions.html
Since there are no files with the same name i just put everything in a new folder and ran the installer.i have no DOSBox in my c: harddrive(all my games are in my d: harddrive to avoid vista's "need to be administrator" bullcrud) so i was expecting the installer to install it for me.instead it just gives me this message:
"DOSBox is required to install this game.please install it before proceding or allow this installer to download it and install it for you".
And after that the installer closes without even doing anything. Then i tried installing it myself in "C:\Program Files\DOSBox" like the floppy instructions say, then ran the installer again and the result was the same. What are we doing wrong?
Thanks in advance

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
Just a guess.....maybe DOSBox also needs to be installed on the D drive so the installer can find it.
Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
My regular DOSBox is on D:\Program Files\DOSBox so that can't be it.dotkel50 wrote:Just a guess.....maybe DOSBox also needs to be installed on the D drive so the installer can find it.

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
You should have been given the opportunity to select your DOSBox or download it, but a missing part from another unrelated function had an odd effect of deselecting the DOSBox function. Try downloading it again.

Alright Took your advice and used internet explorer instead of firefox to download the installer and that solved it. Thanks again CollectorCollector wrote:You should have been given the opportunity to select your DOSBox or download it, but a missing part from another unrelated function had an odd effect of deselecting the DOSBox function. Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
It wasn't a browser issue. You found a flaw with the installer that I fixed.

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
I appreciate it when someone reports errors so I can fix them. Most of the time that someone has trouble with them it is because of version differences that break the installer. If a different version has a different file/folder layout, the installer can't find all of the files. Sometimes even the main executable has a different name when the installer will write the config file for the name it expects. I can add support for these different versions with enough information about the other version, but many that grab my installers will complain on other websites instead of reporting it here to get it fixed. Steam is the worst. They have a couple of the 2006 VU collections. You would not believe the hoops they go through to apply my patches when all they have to do is point the patches in the direction of the installed folder. Only one of the Steam users has ever asked here.
Another common one is the abandonware user. The installers are designed around my copies of the original floppies and CDs. Besides the legal issues, abandonware is usually so altered in unpredictable ways that I don't support abandonware copies.

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
Prompted by pppp's post, i decided to install my floppy version of the game. The install looked ok but when i started it up and clicked on opening i get this message:
I looked in the installed folder and that file is in there. All the *.syn files are only 1kb, does that sound right?Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
They are that small. They are generated during the audio extraction. Should be fixed, now.

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
Just redownloaded the installer and for me it's even worse. When i try to watch the opening the game tells me that the files needed for the opening are not found. I don't even get to where dotkel50 got.Collector wrote:They are that small. They are generated during the audio extraction. Should be fixed, now.

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
Just tested and it is working fine for me. Download it again and do a clean install. If you still have issues, run the diagnostic tool and attach the results here.

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
I think i figured out my problem,i found this among all the installer does:Collector wrote:Just tested and it is working fine for me. Download it again and do a clean install. If you still have issues, run the diagnostic tool and attach the results here.
Execute: "C:\Program Files\DOSBox\DOSBox.exe" -conf "D:\Jogos\KQ6\decompress.conf" -noconsole
So i really have to get a 2nd DOSBox in the c: drive(Mine is in D:\Program Files\DOSBox).
i'm gonna try it.

Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
That worked for me Collector. All's good.
Re: KQ6 floppy version installation
The installer is one of my older installers. It predates my latest DOSBox script that give the user the opportunity to use a different DOSBox than the one in the default location. The part of the script that decompresses the resources still assumes DOSBox to be in the default location, even after the user has chosen a different DOSBox. I didn't notice the problem because I do have a DOSBox in that location. I have adjusted the script to use the chosen DOSBox. It will now use the DOSBox chosen by the user.
Now I need go through my other scripts where I had to use the original 16-bit decompressors and fix those accordingly, too.
