Wit's End on Save Game Problem RE: KQ5

Post by coltraz »

I have used the new installer, accompanied with disc 1 and 2 of "King's Quest Collection" I bought a few years ago. I let it install VScumm and DOSBox. I want to play KQ5. It runs alright, but I cannot save. I am told "The directory/disk can hold no more saved games." I've tried to then click on "Change Directory", but no matter what I input as my directory, I am not it is not valid. I've googled the issue and see someone recommends installing this patch: http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/N ... aters.html

This patch does not install. It cannot find the directory I've installed the collection to even when I manual direct it right to the place it needs. It Does Not Install. It just keeps telling me it can't find where I've installed the collection.

Elsewhere I've read to run the game using DOSBox mounting resource.cfg. I've tried so many combinations of c:/sierra/king's quest/kings quest 5/resource.cfg that I have no idea what else to try and no idea what I'm doing. I don't know how to use DOSBox in this way and I don't see anyone explaining exactly HOW to run the game in this way. This
mount c h:\dosgames
c:
cd kq5
SIERRA.EXE C:\KQ5\RESOURCE.CFG
is supposedly helpful to someone in solving the issue, but to me that means nothing. Can someone explain it? Or help me in some way? I really miss this game and want to play it again.

That sounds about right. It is the collection 1-7 released as a box set for WIndows XP. The box looks like this: http://lparchive.org/Kings-Quest-I-VII/ ... ection.jpg

I've installed it from the discs and had the save game issue, and also installed it FROM the disks with the re-released set up found at: http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updat ... ers.html#K but still had the save game issue.

BTW, I am now running windows 7...

Run the diagnostic tool and post the results here.
