a-10 tank killer

Post by resin »

Small problem with A-10 Tank Killer.. When moving the mouse cursor to the right or down, it moves very slowly (as if the sensitivity was turned way down), but when moving up or left, it moves at normal speed as it should. Very odd, have no idea what could cause this. This is version 1.5. It happens with or without the installer. Anyone else experience this?

Try turning on auto capture with the config tool.

Tried it, didn't fix it.. However this did lead me to discover a problem with the config tool.. It appears that turning on the autocapture causes the game to not run anymore. After turning it on and then looking in the conf, I saw that it now points to a file gcd.com which doesn't even exist in this game's folder (which explains why the game isn't running)..

Anyhow I did manually type in the autocapture command into the (unaltered) conf and it still didn't change the cursor problem. I also tried playing under each output source with no luck. Not sure what else can be tried here.. By the way, this seems to happen only in fullscreen mode.. Any other ideas?

Thanks for reporting about the config tool. Some of my files got mixed up from a hard drive crash recovery. It has been fixed and the updated installer re-uploaded.

I cannot replicate your mouse problem, so I cannot experiment. Two things to try. Experiment with the sensitivity= setting under the [sdl] section. The default value is 100. Also from the ReadMe:
DOSBox ReadMe wrote:CONTROL: The character/cursor/mouse pointer always moves into one direction!

See if it still happens if you disable the joystick emulation, set joysticktype=none in the [joystick] section of your DOSBox configuration file. Maybe also try unplugging any joystick/gamepad. If you want to use the joystick in the game, try setting timed=false and be sure to calibrate the joystick (both in your OS as well as in the game or the game's setup program).
If this does not fix it, I am not sure what more I can do from my end, however, if you attach the log from the diagnostics tool, I'll look to see if there is something wrong with your configuration or if you have any missing files.

Tried all suggestions with no success.. Also it turns out this can happen even when not in fullscreen. Sometimes it will work as it should, sometimes not, it's random. I also tried the Sierra Originals Red Baron CD version but the same thing happened (now I see where that gcd.com came from).. I've tried all that I can think of. I've posted this on vogons as well so maybe someone there can help. Thanks for your effort..

I responded to the thread on VOGONS. If ripsaw's fix works for you, I can include it with the installer, if it causes no issues on my copy.

The fix did stop the down/right sluggishness, yet there is still a problem (I neglected to mention earlier) where the game at times won't fully respond to left mouse clicks. For instance, if I left-click a menu button, the button's graphic will change to a pressed button, but will do nothing more (it won't proceed to wherever that button is supposed to take you). Yet right-clicking always seems to work regardless. At this point I'm just going to accept that this game will have its quirks and live with it..

Apparently the fix file has to call A10.com, so it will only work on the floppy version. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work for yours however.. As you mentioned, you might have a different version of 1.5. Although if neither your floppy or CD versions exhibit this problem, I'm thinking it's something to do with your system setup, unless both your CD and floppy are different versions from my CD and floppy..

I would say if you can somehow make your installer detect the different floppy versions of 1.5 so that it only applies the fix to the problematic version, then go ahead and do it. But seeing that it won't run with your floppy version or the CD, it's obviously not a one-stop fix for all.

I am still discussing it with ripsaw. The mouse movement behavior only occurs in full screen or with autolock on. It is odd that you are encountering the button issue. Both right and left clicks work for me, regardless of autolock, screen mode and with or without the fix. If ripsaw adapts the fix for the CD version, at least the movement issue will be fixed for both versions.
