GK2 -- game freeze

Post by Tinuviel »

I was hoping I wouldn't have another problem, but I do.

I'm right at the end of the game, right before the opera is to start. Grace is checking to ensure that Von Glower is in the right spot with the binoculars, but then the game freezes. I have to actually alt-tab out to the desktop to close the game. Restoring to this point and doing it again produces the same result, it just sticks there.

Any ideas?

I'll attach a zip file with the saves (it's the Opera save) if you would like to see what I'm talking about.

Just a gentle reminder...I stopped playing because I can't get past this one.

On an interesting note, I did end up playing GK3 with the standard game install and had no problems, but the last time I played it (on a different system with WinXP and using the installer) I had tons of problems with the game crashing with video problems. I'm wondering if whatever is in the installer to prevent disk swapping may have been causing my problems...and perhaps that translates to GK2? I haven't tried to run GK2 yet without the installers -- I have a feeling I'd need to run it through DOSBox somehow, and I'm still not quite sure how to do that.

Sorry, I forgot. I'll try to look after I sort out the server issues for this site. Most of the problems with GK3 seem to be due to codec issues. It is probably more of a matter that you do not have conflicting codecs installed on your current machine.

To use DOSBox to play multi disc games requires that you swap discs out as needed. You'll have to refresh the drive cache after changing discs or DOSBox will not recognize the disc change. The best way is to use imgmount with multiple disc images mapped to the same drive letter and swapping them with Ctrl+F4, but you may have problems with mounting more than about 4 images for the same drive.

Tin also mentioned GK3. I answered both topics she posted about.

Bah. I was hoping it was a simpler solution. Ah well, we'll see if we can figure out the freeze up at that one point for GK2 then.

I have explored it some, but it crashes, too. I was trying to run it in a debugger version of DOSBox, but the game crashes without any additional info. I tried Hendroz's installer with the same results. My next step is to play through from and earlier point to see if the problem might be in the save itself. This will take me a little longer and I may not be able to get to it before we can sort out the server issues. If I don't get to it in the next week or two, give me another reminder.
