Getting KQ7 to work on Windows 7

Post by FatherGhostface »

All the other games work on my computer except for KQ7, every time I click on it, it says something along the lines of 'content not found please reinstall' or something. :(

More details, please. What version? If you installed with one of the installers from here, attach the diagnostic log.

I downloaded the KQC installer from here, yes, but KQ7 is the one that won't work for me. This is the message I keep getting whenever I click on the KQ7 icon to play it:

C:\Users\w7\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Temporary InternetFiles\content.IE5\PDQJHU3M\KQCollectionDBUpdate[1].exe not found. Please reinstall

Looks like you've got a mishmash of version 1.4 and the upgraded version 2.00b. Additionally, the version of the patch is slightly outdated. I am not sure why it would be pointing to your Temporary Internet Files. Did you choose run instead of download when you clicked on the download link? As this the VU collection CD or was it the Steam release?

Do a complete uninstall. Reinstall the collection out side of any system folder. The default of C:\Sierra\King's Quest Collection is fine. Redownload the patch from http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/N ... aters.html and save it to your desktop. Run the patch directly from your computer after downloading it. If this works, let me know. If it still fails, run the diagnostic and add the log file as an attachment (don't just paste the contents).

When you say reinstall the KQ collection outside any system folder, do you mean like, on my desktop or something? I'm sorry, you're speaking with someone here who is not very computer savvy. I apologize if you're beating your head against the desk right now like I am. :(

By system folder I mean 'any of the folders created by installing Windows. In other words, not in the Program Files folder. The reason that you should avoid these folders with old games is that write access inside said folders is limited. This causes issues for games that need to write files to its own folder. All of my Sierra installers default to "C:\Sierra\" because of this. As I said,C:\Sierra\King's Quest Collection is fine.

If you have the physical CDs as opposed to the Steam release, you can try the installer from here instead of patching it.

So KQ7 and the rest of the games are working properly now, except for King's Quest 6. Now that one is giving me grief. Everytime I click to play the game, it appears as if it's about the start the game (the screen is black and everything) and then a message in an orangish text box pops up saying "Could not switch to resolution: 640 x 440"

.......Can you help pretty please? And thank you very much for the help you've already given me.

Attach, don't copy and paste, the diagnostic log.

I hope I did this right, I've never attached on a file through a message board message before, I'm ashamed to admit...

That is exactly what I meant. When people paste the log, it makes for a lot of scrolling, just to read through the thread. You have installed it in the Program Files folder. This can cause compatibility problems with old games. Install using this installer, using the default location of "C:\Sierra\King's Quest Collection".

I'm kind of afraid to do anything because I finally have most of the games working now (with the excepton of KQ6), would I have to uninstall everything or just the KQC patch?

Just do a new install in an empty folder with my installer. You can leave the other.
