Gabriel Knight 1 XP Black Screen

Post by LucasJSR »

Hi, I've downloaded the GK1 WinXP setup in order to play GK 1 in my Windows 7 32-bit. The game ran perfectly fine for weeks. But now, all of sudden, when I run GK 1, there's no video, only audio! I can hear the Sierra logo sound and the main menu theme song, but the screen is completely black!! I haven't changed anything, except for a Nvidia graphic card update, but I reinstalled the old version and the game stays the same...
I couldn't find a solution for my problem anywhere, please help!!!

Did you use the DOSBox setup from here or the Endroz Windows setup?

I used the Windows setup, as I'm using the windows version. I forgot to mention, but in rare ocasions the games runs normally, but most of the times that I ran the game it's just a black screen with audio... that's weird...

That is not my setup and I don't support it. The Windows version has too many issues on modern Windows. Use the the DOSBox setup from this site.

Yes, like Collector said, I'd recommend the DOS(BOX) version of GK1. (I can't think of any benefits, in terms of GK1 that Windows has over DOS? I know for example, in KQ6 there's a difference in quality?).

Thanks for all the help! I've installed the DOSBox version and it runs fine. My only complain are the movies (like Gabriel's nightmare), which are displayed in a very tiny screen. But, like I read in other posts, I don't think there's a fix for it. But it's not a big deal, the game is working now!
Thank you all!

While running the game in DOSBox, press CTRL-ENTER (or is it ALT-ENTER, slips my mind at the moment) to display full screen. Press it again to return to window mode.

He is not talking about the size of the Window, but the size of the movie within the Window. Full screen does not solve this.

Sadly that's all we can get due to the resolution. I remember back in the Windows 98 days, 640 x 480 was perfect.

Well, I found a way to make the screen larger during movies, but I'm not sure if it's worth it, since it decreases the game's graphics quality. Just open the RESOURCE.CFG file on the game's folder, and change "videoDrv = VESA.DRV" to "videoDrv = VGA.DRV". The movies don't play in fullscreen, but the screen is significantly larger. But as I said, the graphics get a bit worse...
