LSL1 VGA - 16 Color Version?

Post by soundchaser »

Hello everyone; I'm new to these forums, and I had a quick question that someone more knowledgeable than I will hopefully be able to answer.

A few months ago, I purchased (for $1.99 on eBay) a boxed copy of what I thought was the original pink-box EGA version of LSL1. When I opened up the box, I was surprised to see the copy protection materials from the VGA version inside. I've done a bit of research, and this seems to be a 16-color EGA version of the VGA remake. It includes two 5.25" floppies as its media. My question is: does anyone know anything else about this version, i.e. rarity and why it's in the pink-box and not the blue one? I can post pictures if necessary.

Thanks!

I'd be interested in seeing pictures...

A 16 color version of the VGA remake... that just doesn't seem to make sense.

The box is copyright 1987, but the disks themselves are copyright 1991. The back of the box even references the text parser.

Off hand I would have said that it is the EGA version of the SCI remake mismatched in the AGI box, but for the requirements label listing that it supports sound cards. It is an odd duck. I have several EGA versions of the VGA games and all of them have the same box as the VGA, just with a different requirement label.

I just checked. I have a 16 color version of the VGA remake as well. But it's in the VGA box.

Methinks Collector is onto something. I think the 16 Color VGA disks ended up in the EGA LSL box.

But the puzzling thing is the requirements label. It says "Supported: Roland MT-32, LAPC, CM-32L, Ad Lib, Sound Blaster, PS1, and Game Blaster". That never appeared on an AGI box that I can think of. I would suggest the possibly of an early release, but the disks say VER#2.0.

The side of the requirements label also claims that a 256-color version is available as well. I've talked to MusicallyInspired over on another forum, and he's told me this: "Sometimes the remakes come in the original boxes. The same has been known to happen with Space Quest 1 and the box with stars and the space ship without the screenshot on the front."

That is weird. (Because it also says MCGA, which I don't think the remake could do)

Yep! Perhaps my favorite album of all time (next to Genesis's "Selling England...")

From what MobyGames has said, the remake had MCGA graphics as well as VGA.
