What do you think about...? (eBay-related)

Post by tjk925 »

...sellers on eBay listing old games updated to work on newer systems?

After reading about Collector's work being used without recognition, I wonder if some of the sellers are doing the same and using installers created by the community or mashing user patches together and creating installers.

Example user: allvideo. What annoys me about this user is that they list games using box images of higher value editions than what is actually being sold (like in the case of Sierra games, they list with the main image of the earlier and more complete collections while selling the cheaper VU collections). I get excited when I see those collector's boxes and then realize it's just another allvideo auction. :(
I love KQ/Sierra! Current items: KQ Collector's Ed. ('94 maroon box), KQ Collection Series ('97), Roberta Anth. ('97), KQ5 CD (dark label) + Hint Book, KQ6 CD, KQ7 CD (v2), Offical Book of KQ (1st, 2nd & 3rd), KQ Companion (4th), KQ novels (1, 2 & 3)

If you are referring the GOG, that has been resolved. We have reached an understanding after a bit of a misunderstanding. GOG is the only commercial entity that has explicit permission to use my resources, at least after informing me of the need.

There is one seller that boasts that his items are compatible on modern systems, but I don't think that he is using my installers. He includes a CD in addition to the original media. This seller usually uses the phrase "One click install" in the title of the item. It is possible that he could using my installers to prepare what he has on CD, but without buying one of his items I can't even speculate one way or another.

If a collector is looking for complete packages, he does need to be careful on eBay. Never assume that just because the entry includes an image of the box that it will come with the box. You have to read the description, too. An automatic giveaway is when the image is a boxshot from Moby Games. Matching the wrong box with the actual item could be out of ignorance on the seller's part. This is why I think that it is deceptive for a seller to use an image that is not an actual photo off the item in question. Whether intentional or not, I see it the same as as false advertizing.

That's good to hear about GOG. I had been a bit turned off to them after I originally read about that. I love their presentation.

I think it is good for the community. It's just in how they execute it that can be a bit poor (not GOG so much). I really have taken to reading every little detail because of some of the stuff I find on eBay and CL. That was really my only concern, buyer confusion as to what they are receiving stemming from what I also view as false advertising. Otherwise, they seem to be offering great support for their products.

That's interesting what you say about Moby Games images. I have actually seen that from time to time (the MG watermark). Also, a couple of times I've seen sellers copy my listing images and use them as their own. That's just lame, and lazy.
