Hunter Hunted music

Post by Rudy »

Currently upgrading the Hunter Hunted page in the Chest but having the same issue as before - no music. Previously I recorded the walkthrough without music. Now I used the SierraHelp installer, but still no music. It states that the music files are not present on the CD or someting along those lines. Any way to get around that?

This seems to be a common issue with mid to late nineties Dynamix games by the way. Also had it with 3D-Ultra Radio Control Racers and 3-D Ultra Lionel Traintown.

Open the C:\Windows\SIERRA.INI and under the [Hunter] key and change the "CDPath=" entry to the drive that you have placed the CD (i.e. D:\ or what ever your drive letter is). Not that you will no longer be able to play with out the CD. To re-enable CD less play again, point it back to the installed directory in the INI.

That didn't do the trick unfortunately. It did change something however - instead of saying that it can't find the music, it lists 2 options in the music tab: "None" or "Track #% d". When trying to select the latter, it goes back to "none". I tried to change the path in the sierra.ini to H:\ and H:\HUNTER (where the resource files are).

They are not data resources. They are Redbook Audio CD tracks. Are you using an image of the CD or the actual disc? Can you play Audio CDs in this computer? Attach your diagnostic.

It looks like you have some conflicts with you SIERRA.INI. Tell me what games you still have installed and I'll try to clean up your INI for you.

Ooookay...

There is indeed a lot of stuff installed and uninstalled again and whatnot, but here's a rough list of what is on it at the moment (I removed a bunch of things I'm currently not working on). I guess just the 90ies stuff, right (not the DOSBox games or recent Vivendi things).

Gabriel Knight 3
3-D Ultra Traintown
3-D Ultra Pinball
Hunter Hunted
The Time Warp of Dr. Brain
Half-Life
Sierra Utilities

Things I see in the diagnostics file but are not installed (though there are some leftovers in the programs menu) are:
Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
3-D Ultra Radio Control Racers
Gunman Chronicles
Empire Earth
Empire Earth - The Art of Conquest
Red Baron
Half-Life: Counterstrike
The Incredible Machine Demo
Coolpool
Caesar 3 demo
Pharaoh Demo
Ultra Pinball 3 demo
Antara demo
Hunter Hunted demo
Caesar 3
Trophy Bass 1

That's about it. Diag attached. Thank you in advance for looking at it.

Here is a cleaned up SIERRA.INI. It removes conflicts and all empty keys as well as the entries you said were no longer installed. Replace the INI inside your Windows directory with this cleaned up INI. If anything gets broken, just reinstall whatever game that no longer works to fix it. The original Sierra uninstallers were often sloppy and missed a number of things. I test to make sure my uninstallers more through.

Most of these are of little consequences since the installers rarely add or overwrite any system files. The SIERRA.INI is only going to affect a few installed Sierra games of that era. However, you may find a lot of debris in the Registry. If you feel comfortable in the Registry, you can delete any of the Sierra leftovers. These can be found in six keys:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sierra
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sierra On-Line
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SierraOnLine

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sierra OnLine
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sierra On-Line
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SierraOnLine
If you keep yourself limited to just inside these six keys, the worst that could happen is that you would have to reinstall any games that get hosed.

If you still have no CD Audio, let me know.

Still the same issue I'm afraid... It is the original CD though and my PC does play audio CDs.

Does it still show this? It should list all tracks from "Track #2" to "Track #11". What happens if you use drive G:?

That's my DVD-ROM. Needs to be replaced with a new one. :?

I was thinking - if I put h:\ in the Sierra.INI, then it plays the movie sequences, but if I put c:\sierra\hunter hunted in it, then it doesn't. Can't I put the music files in c:\sierra\hunter hunted and get it going like that, or are they already there? Which files are they, anyway? Is there another stand-alone application that would allow me to test the music outside the game?

Perhaps you are using a USB drive? That may be the source of the missing music.

I tried, but it is not as simple as that. It may be possible to do it, but it would require some experimentation. There could be a better solution and it may also fix your music problem. Try this. Create a BIN/CUE image of the disc and drop them in the game's folder. Mount it with Daemon Tools and edit the path in the SIERRA.INI to what ever is the new drive letter, i.e. if I:\:

Code: Select all

CDPath=I:\Hunter
If this works, a batch file can be made that will automatically mount the CD for you and start the game at the same time.

I have an external hard drive plugged in a USB port (backup for the Chest). Could that have to do with it?

I doubt it, though it would be easy and quick to check.

The free trial version of Magic ISO will work to make a BIN/CUE image. Save the two files with whatever name you wish to use in the game's folder, like Hunter.bin and Hunter.cue.

Install DAEMON Tools Lite (free) For a batch file to both auto mount the image and start the game, paste the following into Notepad, modifying the path to where you installed DAEMON Tools:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\Disk Utilities\DAEMON Tools\DTLite.exe" -mount 0, Hunter.cue
Hunter.exe
Save the file with a ".bat" extension in the game's folder with the BIN/CUE pair. If you want a shortcut with an icon, drag a shortcut to where you want and assign an icon to the shortcut.

If I could find a good freeware lightweight command line for creating BIN/CUEs I would include all of this in my installers for Windows games that use CD Audio tracks.
