keyboard stuttering in Quest for Glory V

I am having difficulty with controlling my character in fights with the keyboard(any keyboard) In Windows XP if I issue a command(for example G for slice) he will continue slicing and will not stop , if I use the arrow keys or any key the same thing. I must use the keyboard for fighting to access the advanced moves and dodging it is making playing the game impossible! I have already patched to 1.2 and installed the Win2k patch. I have tried several keyboards but all the same result. Have tried various compatibility settings but it either makes the whole game stutter and NOT the keyboard or it makes the keyboard stutter and NOT the game. Weird and I don't know what to do. Please help!

I won't be needing your help. I found by doing a clean boot of my PC (start<run msconfig and unchecking all the selective start up boxes except system services) I was able to stop the stuttering in the game. Some background program was interfering with game play. thanks anyway!
