Quest for Glory IV - Shadows of Darkness

Post by Lepluto »

Hello everyone,

I have a bit of a problem. As retarded as it seems, I seem to have lost my father's Quest for Glory IV - Shadows of Darkness CD version... Therefore, I cannot install it at the moment. Would anyone be so kind to hook me up with a valid download link for it, or perhaps upload the game itself if possible?

I found several versions, however I am having trouble installing them, so I cannot quite use ScummVM (the emulator I'm currently using) to get it sorted.

Thank you very much in advance!

Update: I managed to find a CD version of the game from a friend of mine! Hoorah! However, another problem has risen. Whenever I try to run it with ScummVM it simply crashes and nothing happens. I am really at a loss here, would appreciate ANY back-up people can give.

Thanks in advance guys!

Update 2: I managed to get the game to run!

However, I cannot import my character from Quest for Glory III. Any ideas?

I am currently running this DOSBox platform called D-Fend Reloaded.

First, when you are looking for a download of a Sierra game, always check out GOG, first. Anything free will be an illegal abandonwarez site.

QfG4 is not yet supported by ScummVM. You should use the new installer http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/N ... ers.html#Q for the best results.

Update 3: I seem to have used ScummVM for Quest for Glory 1,2 and 3. People say that it is now impossible to use the .sav files in DOSBox in particular. Any help I can get in regards with this? I am aware that my questions may seem a tad retarded, but I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this sort of stuff.

You could try a character import utility to create a new character with similar stats.

Hmm, I might as a last resort. They also mentioned "gunzipping" the ScummVM .sav files, whatever that means. I'll look it up and post an update as soon as I find something.

Thank you Collector :)

Alrighty guys, so I have good news. Apparently, all you have to do is take out the ScummVM .sav files (found in the folder where ScummVM has been installed) and open them with WinRAR (or any other unpacking program for that matter). After that, you'll notice another file inside, named exactly as your .sav file only with no extensions. That's the one you actually need. Copy it onto your Desktop or whatever. Right click, go Rename and just type ".sav" after its name (in other words, change its extension to .sav). Then copy this new .sav file in the folder where your Quest for Glory - Shadows of Darkness is located. This is essential, because apparently DOSBox can not read files outside of this directory.

Note 1: Bear in mind that this is something useful to know if you've been using ScummVM for the first 3 games of Quest for Glory, and transferred to DOSBox for Quest for Glory 4, just like I did. Having other import problems can be fixed with the patches.

Note 2: Make sure you have the import fixing patch installed. It can be found here, just scroll down a bit:

There you go guys, problem solved :)

Note that I only use ScummVM if there is some compelling reason to do so, such as fro Win only games that do not run natively on modern Windows. Also, that patch is for the floppy version only. Applying the floppy patches to the CD version can and will make it crash. If you use the installer linked above, no patching is required.
