The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
Hello,
Hope everyone is doing well! I was just wondering if anyone has possibly run into the following issue with this game. I have searched in many places and cant seem to find anything to help fix the problem.
I am running the game (CD version) in DOSBox version 0.74 and whenever I get to the part where the Slam Dunk Cola commercial is shown, the game freezes. Interestingly enough, it never freezes in the same spot of the commercial either - it varies each time I try to run it through, but ultimately it will freeze at one point or another. Does anyone possibly know of a way to fix this?
Thanks for your help!!!

If you used the installer from here, attach the diagnostic.

Oh - I think I found the diagnostic tool. It says it can't be run from the operating system I am using (it's a windows 98 computer, built for old gaming). I tried running it direct without DOSBox, but that famous "Unable to initialize HDS" error happens .

Re: The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
Now it gets even stranger! I rebooted DOSBox and tried again and it worked. I shut down DOSBox and restarted it again and now it crashes during the commercial again. This doesn't make any sense at all. This time the colors got all out of whack and then froze...

Re: The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
Unfortunately it seems the problem still exists even with the installer . It is completely random too it seems. One time I will load DOSBox and it will crash right at the beginning of the commercial and all of the colors go whacked out. Ill restart DOSBox and try it again and it'll crash at the middle of the commercial but all the colors will remain normal. I'll restart DOSBox again and it''ll play through fine...
There is no way to tell when itll play through fine - it crashed randomly with the above 2 scenarios dozens of times before it actually worked once. I just dont get it!

Re: The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
Did you do a clean install and did you start the game with the provided shortcuts? The installer includes the official patch, which is supposed to address the lockups. You should not use any of the save games from any place that you experienced a lockup or it can carry the bug over onto the patched game.

No I did copy over the saves from the file where the crash was happening. Let me try it out and start the game from the beginning. I will let you know how it goes in a few

Re: The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
OK so i tried it out and it seems the same problem persists.
I did a fresh install - no saves, nothing from the previous version. I got to the slam dunk commercial the first time and it went through. I restarted DOSBox again and tried it a second time and it locked half way through the video. The TV turned purple and the picture turned all messed up.
I really have no idea whats causing this...

Re: The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
OK - below is the log that I ran. Note one thing - the CPU settings had to be changed to what they currently are or the game and sounds were unplayably choppy - probably because its an older computer

Re: The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
That computer is really too old to be running DOSBox on it. You really need at least about a 1 GHz machine. One of the main reasons to use DOSBox is it shields you from speed bugs. With the introduction of the 486 CPUs the first speed bugs started to be exposed. This is why the installer's core and cycles were set to the values used. It sets the speed close to what the game was designed for. Best guess is that your PC is too slow for DOSBox and too fast for the game. If you have it, try installing on a newer PC or install on an old 386.

Re: The Adventures of Willy Beamish Commercial Crash (DOSBox)
bummer - its weird tho, i wonder why sometimes it works and then other times it doesnt. Its like the error is random for some reason. I can get through the video sometimes with no problem and then other times it crashes. Very odd...
