QfG2 Dead End?

So I am playing QfG2 which was my favorite in the series. Something happened that I don't ever recall happening before. I get to the point with the caged beast and when I come back after get the potion; he is dead! I try all the normal stuff to get hair from him, but keep getting messages like "Why do you need that from a carcus." Is my memory failing me? Did I miss something? Do I have to reload?

You'll probably have to reload. The caged beast dies after a certain period of time. Its timer starts ticking as soon as you first see it, so basically you have to act fast. Also, in case you do not have the dispel potion at the certain time, it might mean that it dies due to that.

Helping the beast isn't necessary for winning the game.

Yes, indeed. It is worth quite a lot of puzzle points and tells you all about Ad Avis and his magic, but is not necessary.
