1994 'Kings quest Collector's Edition' - 15th anniversary

Post by bindi »

:?:
I just bought the 1994 'Kings quest Collector's Edition' - 15th anniversary - and am having no luck getting it to run, on DOSBox or windows. I have a Windows XP. Can anyone please help me figure out how to make it run?
Thanks so much

I have made an initial release of a new installer for disc 1 of the 1994 King's Quest Collector's Edition - 15th anniversary. This is XP/Vista compatible and will install King's Quest, King's Quest I SCI, King's Quest II, King's Quest III, King's Quest IV, King's Quest V and the Demo of King's Quest VII. Also can install the extras included on disc 1. It can also download and install DOSBox.
An installer for disc 2, which has King's Quest VI, will have to wait at least until the weekend.

It works!
:?: A question - do you know how to make the screens full size? - at the moment it is stuck on about 50% size and the maximise button is grayed out.

thanks again Grand Poobah

I believe this is the Collection I have - 1.036 9/12/94 :)

Anyway!
Installing the windows version of KQ6 on Vista 32 bit - I clicked the SetupKQ6.exe and away we went.

At first it came up with an information box, that the game needs to run in 256 colormode, then it started installing.
You can then decide if you want to install it all to the harddrive or not.

After the install, you have to go to the game folder and rightclick SCIWV.exe on the compatilibity tab and make it run in 256 colors.
Also since the game runs in 640x480 you have to change your own window resolution to get a bigger game window.

It started of with a sort of color distorted window, that went away by cllicking in it.
The game starts and plays fine - except whenever our heros character window pops up when talking, his picture is distorted too.
The others look fine.

Maybe I should add, that everything works fine.
The change of the cursor by right clicking, the top menu bar, the save/load etc.
The audio and videos work fine too....

Now if only the color thing would be straightened out :D

Compatibility mode, Run in 256 colors. I'll have to make an option for installing on Vista 32 without VDMS.

Ahem, as you noticed, I already did that

Maybe I should add, that I have UAC disabled.
I have no antivirus running at the moment or any codecs installed.

Sorry I missed that. UAC should make no difference. It might be a quirk with your graphics card driver. I had an XP machine that wouldn't change color depth through Compatibility mode, once. Will color depth change through Compatibility mode for anything else? Try pasting what is in the Target box in the shortcut properties into Notepad and save it as a .BAT file. Set this to run in 256 colors and start the game with this batch file.
