King's Quest dimensions change when using Windows Installer

Post by Gooey98 »

I recently downloaded the new installer for the 1994 King's Quest collection to use on my PC. I noticed something odd about this installer. The original King's Quest game is in a 8:5 ratio (WTH?!?!), but when using the .exe files that are created as part of the installation, it opens in a 4:3 ratio instead. Any clue why? Was this something they did so it would look better on modern computers? It seems strange to me to have the enlarged "pixels" slightly skewed.

No, the aspect correction is so that they will be the same dimensions as they were made for on a modern monitor. The original aspect was 4:3. Monitors of the time had taller pixels, but with the same overall aspect ratio, just with fewer scan lines. So without using DOSBox's aspect correction, the images are unnaturally distorted.
