Quest For Glory V Won't Start

Post by Meridion »

Hi Guys,

Been trying pretty much anything to make it work, quite unsuccessfully.

Tried the Installer from this page, and tried the GOG Version as well, both won't seem to work (btw, yeah.. i've bought this game like 3 times already :P)

Tried compatibility mode, non compatibility mode, with patches, without patches, having quicktime installed, not having quicktime installed, having the quicktime safe mode on and off, tried forcing the integrated graphics as well as the nvidia gtx680m, the result is always the same:

I open the game, and as soon as I open it, the resolution of the screen changes, but however i'm still on windows, the game is minimized, and the process on the task manager is labeled as not responding.

Tried playing the game from a WinXP VM and that works, but would really like to be able to play it on my normal system.

I'm running Windows 8.1 (x64), and even though the diagnostic tool says that UAC is on, it's off.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks !

Here's the diagnostic tool info:

You do not seem to be missing any files, nor am seeing anything else wrong. he compatibility mode setting you have gave me a clue. Apparently, Win8 does not allow the 16-bit color mode the game uses. If that compatibility mode setting does not work for you, you will probably need to find another solution. You could try using DxWnd to run the game in a window as a work around.

I am trying to run QFGV on Win XP SP 3, a 3 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo machine with a CRT monitor. Any suggestions?

I used the installer from this site to install the game from my original CDs.

(By the way, a tip for the installer. It could prompt the user for "Install CD" rather than QFGV CD and then "Game CD" rather than "Disc 2". That's how Sierra labelled the two discs.)

What happens is that I double click on the icon, it switches my monitor but then immediately switches it back with the standard "Send Error Report" / "Don't Send" thing. It wouldn't let me copy/paste from the window when I tried to examine the error report. I've tried the various compatability modes as well as the "640x480" and "256 color" options, with the same result.

The one exception is that when I try to run using NT 4.0 compatibility, it gives an actual error - DirectX 5.0 or higher is not installed. I have DirectX 9.0c installed.

I no longer have an XP machine to test the installer, so I no longer take XP into account when writing the installers. XP has gotten pretty long in the tooth. You should not have to set compatibility. Trouble shooting for an XP box will be a bit of a shot in the dark for me. Run the diagnostic and attach the log here.

I was about to ask what the diagnostic was - well, that's just brilliant :)

The reason I hoped to load it on my XP machine (or even my 98 machine, if I have to, although I don't have a sound card in that one) is that I wanted the original experience full screen on a CRT, and my XP machine is just the easiest to run one of my CRT monitors from.

The diagnostic seems to be incorrectly determining that I have the game installed in a "Program Files" directory, when I don't.

Code: Select all

There is something wonky going on. You said that you have a Core 2 Duo, but it is reporting a P3 Xeon. I have no idea why the tool would report that it is in the %ProgramFiles% folder if it was run in "C:\Sierra\Quest for Glory 5". What dotNET framework do you have installed? Was this game moved after it was installed? Is this an emulator instead of actual hardware?

Again, some, if not all of the anomalies may be because of XP.

Thanks for trying to help Collector!

It's absolutely a Core 2 Duo. It's real hardware, no emulation. I installed Framework 4. I did not move the game - or touch any of the game files - after it was installed.

Then I have to assume that XP is breaking it. I'll see if I can get someone else with an XP machine to try it.

BTW, that is enough machine to run Win7. The hardware is also new enough that running XP on it is often hit or miss. Drivers for newer hardware usually are not optimized for XP, it they even develop XP drivers. Newer games and applications may have problems with XP's missing or antiquated APIs. If you do not want to lose your XP you could setup a dual boot. And it will be much safer being on the internet with a newer OS. Just a thought.

Oh yeah, that's one of my legacy machines for various reasons. Not connected to internet. My primary machine is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Of course the GOG version should be identical as it is my design, too. Can you test the installer on that XP machine?

I will need to dig out my QFGV CD and find my USB CD player. (Dell Inspirion does not have a CD player).

Will try to get to it ASAP.

Thanks for your help as well Tawmis :)

I actually don't own most of the GOG collections, as I generally have multiple versions of the originals. I should pick it up the next time they have a sale :P
