Installed the game from the CD and used your installer Collector. The only "problem" I had was needing to install .NET 4.0 after I ran the installer (in order to launch the game).

Here's the log (not sure if comparing it to the other that is not working)...

So outside of some XP wonkieness with the helper apps it looks like the game itself is not broken on XP. The problems that Brandon is having are something specific to his machine. So it would be a process of elimination, such as checking/updating drivers, looking for codec conflicts, AV interference, etc.

Hrm, strange... Well, thanks for the troubleshooting efforts guys.

My XP machine is a clean and minimal install from some time ago with very little crap. I updated to SP3 and then took it off the internet, and pretty much the only stuff I have installed on it is Photoshop and a few Sierra games, and then I installed Framework 4 and Quicktime.

Like all 90s Windows games, if I recall the install process correctly, QFG5 automatically installed its own version of DirectX without asking and with no indication that it was checking my system first to see if I already had DirectX installed. (Oh how that used to drive me nuts.)

If I discover what my problem is, I'll be sure to post about it in case it helps anyone else.

The DirectX installer should bail when it finds a higher version already installed. The Quicktime should not be required since the installer includes what is needed of the version of Quicktime for which the game was designed.

Try moving or renaming the DATA\MOV folder and starting the game. This will prevent it from trying to play the Sierra logo and opening movie and go directly to the character creation screen. If this works then it is a Quicktime issue.
