Hi!
I've recently been replaying the DOS version of QFG4 from my 1997 Collection CD. I installed it using the Sierra Help Pages installer on DOSBox.
My problem is a bit difficult to describe. You know how normally when a character starts speaking, the background music is supposed to lower in volume? This is done so that you can hear what they're saying. Well every so often, when the character moves to a new text box, the music returns to blasting maximum volume out of my speaker and I can't make out the voices anymore. This is especially bad at the finale of the game because the song is very loud.
Does anyone else have this problem? And is there a way that I can fix it? Thanks!

Unfortunately Windows no longer includes the ability to adjust MIDI and digital sounds separately. You can try this 3rd party utility. I just tried it and it seems to work. http://strobotone.de/interface/html/other_works/dev/

That'd be all fine and good, but it doesn't come with any instructions. When I try to run the program, it fails to detect any MIDI device and just quits. How exactly do I set it up?

Oh my god... please disregard my last reply. I actually figured it out! It's such an obvious and dumb thing that my brain couldn't even comprehend trying it.
The Volume slider inside QFG4 actually controls the music and NOT the digital sound. So cutting the slider in half will reduce the music and turning the knob up on my speaker will allow me to hear all of the voices perfectly! Well, I learned something new today.

Glad you got it sorted.

Enjoy the game! QfG4 is one of my favourites in the series, and features highly (I'm sure) on many other people's list.
