Speaking of confusion, I tried exploring on my own and got very confused - and then Mahahahananananan fried me (several times). Is there any way to escaping that guy?

You're not allowed to do various things while the wizard is around. You'll have to wait until he's either asleep or away on a journey. You can either wait in real time or use your bed. The timer at the top of the screen is color-coded for how close the wizard is the waking/returning, so be sure not be doing anything forbidden when that happens.
