GoG KQ8 on Windows 10

Post by Purduecoz »

Hi,

It seems that the GoG version of KQ8 Mask of Eternity has a number of pretty serious issues with it. While I used to be able to work around them by editing INI files and such, I can no longer do so on Windows 10 64-bit. The program crashes with no warnings or messages as soon as it's run. I was able to get the game to run seemingly well by digging up an ISO of my Mask of Eternity CD that I bought long ago and using Collector's KQ8 installer. My question is if there is any way to fix the GoG version of MoE - my brother bought the game from GoG and unlike me, doesn't have a MoE CD to fall back on.

I asked the GoG folks about working with Collector to actually improve the somewhat broken version of MoE that they're selling, but they gave me some answer about not being able to legally patch the game, and to create a Windows XP virtual machine in order to play the game because Windows 10 is not supported. I'd like to do better than that! Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks,
Purduecoz

I would have to check, but I believe that the GOG version has a folder called 'CD' that is essentially the contents of the original CD. I can check when I get home, but it may be possible to burn the contents of that folder to recreate the original CD.

That folder is named 'data', but it is missing the files from the base directory of the CD. Most of these are not needed, but two missing files are required for the installer to work. the data1.cab and starttxt.txt. You would also need to include the 'Game' folder from the GOG installed folder to reconstruct the CD for use with the SHP installer.

I'll give this a shot. Thanks! So you do still need the CD then...

Bah, don't believe a word GOG support says. They just can't figure out what I changed in the executable since it's a different build that doesn't use GetDriveType() and doesn't work without the vol files unpacked.

I suppose I should get around to writing a patch installer for the GOG version now that the TalkComplete bug is fixed, I was hoping NicoDE would make some more progress on his runtime library re-write first though.

I have been waiting to update the SHP installer for all of the fixes to be finished, too.
