Audio problems running The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain in DOSBox

Post by Akril »

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit now, but I still managed to get The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain working in a copy of Windows 3.11 running inside DOSBox.

Unfortunately, I'm having some problems with the game's audio. Sometimes it works just fine (albeit a tad choppy, even if I'm using a CD image instead of the actual CD), but sometimes it cuts out when I'm starting the game or never kicks in at all. Not only that, but after I close the game when the audio stops working, sometimes I can't get any audio out of any of the programs in Win3.1 (though I do still have sound in Windows 7).

This problem seems completely random, and I can't figure out what might be causing this. I have contemplated installing Dr. Brain 3 in VM VirtualBox, but I have had some difficulties with it in the past, and I'd like to see if there's a solution to this issue before I start going down a new path.

Thanks in advance!

Being a 16-bit windows only game I have mot explored this game in a long time. Anything I could suggest would just be a shot in the dark. What core and cycles are you using?

Try normal core and play with cycles starting at around ~10000.

Hmm...interesting. That solution seems to have almost solved my problem. I haven't had the sound fail on me yet, but for some reason, the opening theme doesn't play when I start the game (the Sierra jingle plays just fine, but not the main theme on the credits screen). I'll keep experimenting to see if anything changes.

Just do not go over 20000 cycles with normal core.
