King's Quest Play Through - Commentary.

Is the game being a ROYAL pain? Need a hint? Got a problem? This is the place to discuss King's Quest!

Playing in turns via savegames makes a lot of sense for games that the players can't beat by themselves or for games where players can have a lot of creative control over the outcome of the game (e.g. in a strategy game, a community playthrough will let each player experience scenarios they might not have encountered by themselves). It doesn't make much sense for games with just one solution, especially if the participants already know it. It would then just be the same experience as playing the game by themselves, except they do less of it.

Playing through a game and then discussing it while it's still fresh in everyone's mind sounds a lot more appealing (assuming the discussion actually goes well, at least).
I like the book club idea too; that'd be the most ideal. However, as I said before, the problem is time zones. We're all pretty scattered - not just across the states - but across the world.

So the passed save game; allows everyone to partake, at their leisure, to play and record themselves, discussing the game as they play. Then putting all those files into one long play through.

This way, for example, BBP could be a part of it (just using her, because I know she's outside of the US), without feeling like she can't be a part of it, because time zones would never align.

No, the book club method is the answer to different time zones and schedules. Book clubs do not read together at meetings. They select the book they will all read and they go home to read the chapters agreed upon. They later get together to discuss that part of the book. That is where a forum works, even given the time differences. A discussion here can take place over hours, even days just as it is with this discussion. People can both play and discuss it on their own time.

Also, any commentary I could make would be in text. I'm not going to record myself.

Well, the idea was to post it online (like Youtube) to put it out there, promote the game, and possibly SHP.

We're talking about very different things here.

What you're talking about is the collaborative production of a video series where people play the game, monologue their thoughts as they play it, then publish the result.

What Collector and I are talking about is sharing the game in the sense multiple people just play the game at the same time and then talk with each other about their experiences. For example, the host could say something like "We'll start the discussion of chapter 1 of game such-and-such on Sunday, so be sure to play through that part by then". This would let people have a more in-depth discussion than if they'd last played it many years ago, and it would let people play through the game more deliberately, if they know they'll be discussing it. There's no video, just a discussion (and the experience of playing the game "together" with others).

I have zero interest in using my voice to just commentate on something for wider consumption, but I do like discussing the games in text. I don't think we have the critical mass of people who are similarly interested, though.

Yeah, it would take having the traffic that we once had to make a "game club" work. So many are now on Facebook, but I am not too interested in having any in-depth conversations with Facebook's limited posting abilities.

Right. (Which is what this thread is about - the videos I've done {solo} as a commentary play through) - but would be cooler to have a wider audience of people who are a part of it. :)

And I get that people would not want to be a part of it, don't want their voice recorded, etc. Which is fine.

I was just thinking how fun it'd be to have multiple people playing the same game, and cutting it all together as one collaborative video.

Rather than just listen to ME drone on about the game. :) (Which is why I mentioned trying to get my wife to play KQIV with me, so there's a female perspective, since that's the next game I need to play).

Or combine a streaming play through, such as with Twitch and a hangout.

Was editing my King's Quest II play through... Hope to have it uploaded this weekend.

Already filmed and did King's Quest III (you can read about my woes), but still need to edit it (like, the aforementioned waiting 22 minutes for eagle to drop the feather)...

Will do. And I can add the previous (already posted) ones and link here for any comments.

But the KQ2 one I am having to re-edit. They were originally saved with Windows Movie Maker, I have since gotten Sony Vegas. But when I save the video (even though the preview looks fine) half way through it pixelas HORRIBLY. This is apparently a known issue, and there's plenty of suggestions how to fix it, none of which have worked for me. So I am using Sony Vegas to save it as a WMV, and see if it pixelates (was originally doing it as an AVI). It's just so weird, because the first 20 minutes of the video are fine, then blam - it's like looking at it through very drunk eyes.

Update: Saving it as a WMV removes the blurry effect. So that's good. Saving the audio track with it now. (Then have to split it into 15 minute segments to upload onto Youtube). So, sometime this week or weekend, I should have it all done and uploaded.

King's Quest II - just a play through:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... q_pxwsLVQc

And King's Quest II with my commentary...
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... rudOUpcs2h

For some reason when I linked the play list in order with the youtube code - it wouldn't link the first one (always linked it as the second one), and I am entirely too tired to figure out why.
