OK, just tried it staying underneath 900 ft -- and all the torpedoes miss! (Or more accurately, some miss, and some "pass by".) The "Miss" sound on an IBM Music Feature Card is exactly the same sound as a fatal hit -- an echo-ey clang sound. Is this true on the SoundBlaster/MT32 versions as well?

Seems like you'll be hit if you're 1) going any faster than the slowest speed, 2) have not switched off active sonar, 3) are possibly too shallow, despite advice to "dive and surface repeatedly between 100 and 900".

Given all that, at least for me, the notion of the enemy torpedoes being randomly effective does not seem to be true. And thus the save/restore method doesn't seem to work. I'm always hit, with varying death messages (leadfoot, do it deeper, etc). Can anyone thing of something I've forgotten?
Check the DOC/PDF I posted in this Codename: Iceman thread.

I was having the same problem you were and figured out what I was doing wrong. That SHOULD help you get past that battle (and the rest of the freaking sub battles, which I absolutely hated!)

This last play through I was using the Roland... so I am not sure if it's the same on the Soundblaster/MT32.
