Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and I have a question that I'm sure has been asked before. I recently purchased the King's Quest Collection, Games 1-7 (1997) and installed it successfully on my Window's Vista. Games 1-6 are fine when I try to run them normally, but KQ VII gives me an error: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see if you need a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the program, and then contact the software publisher." I changed my video configuration to 16-bit under the control panel, but it still wouldn't work. SO I tried to run the game on DOS, but I get an error message on that program for ALL of the KQ games: "Illegal command: Sierra."
This is quite annoying. Any suggestions? I know that people have gotten these games to work on Vista SOMEHOW.
KQ VII: Error when running on Vista?
Re: KQ VII: Error when running on Vista?
Welcome to the forums. You are in luck. See the New KQ Collection DOSBox update thread. It will convert your version 1.4, windows only King's Quest VII to version 2 with DOS interpreter to run in DOSBox. It is the only way to run 16 bit games on 64 bit Windows. It also addresses the one speed issue of the game, the Firecracker bug. It will also upgrade DOSBox to the latest version, applies all relevant patches, restores the missing files and automatically sets the games up to start in DOSBox from Windows shortcuts.
Be sure to allow the patch to download and install the latest version of DOSBox. Remember, ti is strongly recommended that you do not install the collection in the "Program Files" folder. Please choose another location, like "C:\Sierra\King's Quest Collection". This avoids problems that most have with running old games on Vista with its security restrictions on system folders.
