Dear fans of Gold Rush! 2,

The Steam-website of Gold Rush! 2 is online! The game will be released on the March 28 for PC.
In addition, the release date of the boxed version is fixed. It will be released on June 23 in retail.
But all pre-order in our online shop will get the game much more earlier!
The reason of the later date in the retail is that our publisher didn’t get it listed earlier.
But the production starts as scheduled start of May and we will send it out then asap.

Additionally the info that the boxed version will get a larger amount of content than planned. Details will be released soon.
The sale price of the boxed version will be changed to 19,99 Euro. Nothing will be change for all pre-orders. You have pre-ordered the game for 14,99 Euro and get the version with larger amount of course for the pre-order price.

We thank you very much.

Man, this is going to be yet another game that's going to sit and collect dust until I learn to manage my time (and hobbies) to allow me to get to the plethora of games I have yet to finish...

I certainly hope that this game is easier than the original. ;) I'm a bit too young to have played the original, but from what I gather, the original Gold Rush was absolutely brutal - as in, you died every 2 nano-seconds or so.

So I really, really hope that this one is more forgiving... 8-)

Gold Rush was brutal. But it also added some realism for what the people who trekked across endured.

So I just finished Gold Rush 2 and… it’s not good. I mean really not good.

For starters, it is incredibly short and easy. Steam says I clocked 3 hours and managed to complete it without any problems (and 3 hours is probably generous since I lingered and explored in a few places). The game is broken up into three sections: California, the Transcontinental Railroad, and Brooklyn. California takes the longest only because it is bigger and takes longer to get places. The train sequence only consists of a few screens which means “puzzles” consist mainly of finding an item in Screen A and using it in Screen B. At times, I found myself thinking “Oh, I probably need to do ‘this’ to solve the puzzle” only to speak to a character who explains that, yes, that is exactly what I should do. You get a hint even though it was obvious to begin with.

The writing is somehow clumsy and awkward. It’s as if they had a first draft and just stuck with it without rereading it and giving it more polish. To make things worse, I got the impression they just gave the voice actors the script and used the first take in the recording. Try reading a sentence out loud without having read it before. It kind of sounds like that sometimes. As a result, some words come out misspoken, like “houth” instead of “house”, “Louis” instead of “Louise”, and “Ballif” (short “a” like in “pal”) instead of “Bailiff”. The plot involved Boss Tweed and is resolved, like everything else, rather quickly. Do maybe three “fetch quests” and you are done. Along the railroad, they incorporate some historical facts along the way, much like in the original game (which was a nice touch), but most of the stuff involving Tweed is made up which makes me wonder why they used a historical person in the first place.

The design of the environments is inspired by the original. Brooklyn is mapped the same way with all of the locations in the same spots and Jerrod moving from screen to screen like in an AGI game. The graphics are really bad, though. Jerrod moves awkwardly like some strange robot and the backgrounds look pre-rendered. The closest comparison would be to QFG5… except that the Hero moved better and the backgrounds had more life and color to them and felt more like a real environment. And QFG5 came out 20 years earlier! It was also amusing to see this woman “walking” around in Brooklyn. With her dress, she moved around like a pink Dalek. It's funny: AGI characters are just a handful of pixels but somehow better resemble a person walking than in this game. And a 320x200x16 screen can feel more lifelike.

Other notes:
Jerrod speaks with a British accent. I’m not sure what a person from mid-19th century Brooklyn should sound like, but I don’t think this is it.

In the grocery store there is a “barrel of pea”. The narrator says “barrel of pea”. I have no idea if this was intentional. I did find it amusing.

So yeah. I found this pretty disappointing. I can forgive the graphics and overlook the writing (it makes it amusing in a way), but the game itself is just bland.

Any idea why they made it like this? It sounds like they cut many, many corners. They could've outlined the game, or maybe used a beat sheet to write out a synopsis. (Outlines and Beat Sheets are two very helpful tools I use to plan out a story before I write it). Instead, it sounds like the writers just pantsed the process, looked at the first draft, thought it was good enough, and left.

Barrel of pea, indeed. Where were the proofreaders?

There are places in the US that speak something closer to Elizabethan English than what is spoken anywhere in the modern UK. It is a linguistical phenomenon that colonies tend to be more conservative with language than the mother country. Even in more recent times British English seems to have evolved considerably over the past 100 years. Just listen older British media and anything from the past decade or two. Even the grammar has somewhat changed. The point of all of this is that a modern Brooklyn accent would be wrong, too, but would be far closer to what was spoken then.

That said, remember that it is a German company and the voice acting was probably done by Europeans. Most there would have learned British English. The pity is that an actor's accent for a role is a detail that was given more consideration than it seems to be today.

Like I said, I can deal with poor graphics and sloppy writing, but the biggest problem is that there's barely an adventure game there and that is a problem with game design.

The actors listed in the manual have American names, or I suppose they could have been British. Maybe that is why the narrator's line readings come off as a little awkward. Maybe he was trying to fake an American accent.
