TSG's Final Fantasy Marathon for St. Jude - July 14-19!

Hey guys!

Starting one week from today (July 14), TheSpeedGamers and I will be holding a 120-hour Final Fantasy Marathon for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital! In case you're unfamiliar, St. Jude is an organization that is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

From July 14 through July 19, we'll be playing through the numbered Final Fantasy games in order, all while trying to raise as much as possible for St. Jude. To add to the fun of our events, we have created a Final Fantasy-themed campaign that will play out over the course of the marathon. The name of the campaign is “Pixels vs Polygons.” During the marathon, the attendees will be split into two teams: Team Pixels and Team Polygons. Each person is represented by an avatar that displays their stats: attack and defense. Every time you donate to St. Jude, you can choose a marathon attendee that you would like to power up. For every $5, an attendee will have their stats increased. Twice a day, the two teams will have 4 players from each side pitted against each other in battle. The battle will take the two sides’ stats into consideration when calculating a victor, with the winning team gaining a point for their side. At the end of the campaign and the marathon, one team will win out as the champion.

We've also got a ton of prize raffles, auctions, and other donation incentives that we'll be running during the event, and it's looking like it's going to be one of our best ones yet! If you get a chance, I hope y'all tune in at 6pm CT at http://twitch.tv/thespeedgamers and say hey!

Excellent charity - but why not FF7 - the best FF game? :)

It should since JTV became Twitch, but I'm not positive if there was a time limit on accounts transitioning since it was a few years ago.

Our FF7 runner is probably going to be our best one during the whole marathon if everything works out like he's hoping.

We've partnered with Fangamer to offer a couple of Final Fantasy-themed shirts if anyone is interested. From now through July 20, $10 from the each shirt sale will be donated to St. Jude. The shirts were also designed by one of TSG's marathon attendees, Space Coyote/Nina Matsumoto (who is an Eisner award-winning artist that's worked on Simpsons comics for Bongo Comics : https://simpsonswiki.com/wiki/Nina_Matsumoto)

Jasef, a bit of trivia, did you ever hear of how St. Jude got its start?

Just that it was founded by Danny Thomas.

I just got back to a computer for really the first time since the marathon, so I can finally catch up on everything! All in all, we ended up raising $33,580 for St. Jude over the course of the event, and we were able to announce Resident Evil, Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon as our next four marathons (in October, December, March, and June).

Here's a little retrospective I put together from the event! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOZBkWWcHYw

I have know for some time, but think it is a good story for the genesis of a a great institution. From the St. Jude's site:
As a young man, Danny Thomas had a simple goal: to entertain people and be successful enough at it to provide for his wife and family. But work wasn’t easy to come by.

As he and his family struggled, his despair grew. He wondered if he should give up on his dreams of acting or find a steady job. He turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. “Show me my way in life,” he vowed to the saint one night in a Detroit church, “and I will build you a shrine.”

That prayer to St. Jude marked a pivotal moment in his life. Soon after, he began finding work, eventually becoming one of the biggest stars of radio, film and television in his day.
Bold mine
